The article below is from Andrew Sullivan's site. I really agree with his assessment of how damaging the conservative religious position on homosexuality is to people, and this man's case is a good example. Although he has railed against gay rights, my heart does go out to him; how difficult it must be to live such a bizzare lie. I felt much the same way for Jim McGreevey, who also was agaisnt gay marriage; he feared if he said he was for it, people would guess his secret. And for Foley, too. All were led by shame and fear into a life of corruption. If they had lived in a world that wasn't so hateful and judgemental of gays, they could have saved so many from so much pain.
Allowing gay people to freely be who they are seems like it would be so much less damaging than this, no?

The leader of 30 million evangelicals and vocal opponent of gay equality ... is gay, and the psychosis of the closet appears to have led him into a dangerous and self-destructive pattern of behavior with a male escort. Money quote:
The acting senior pastor at New Life, Ross Parsley, told KKTV-TV of Colorado Springs that Haggard admitted that some of the accusations were true.
"I just know that there has been some admission of indiscretion, not admission to all of the material that has been discussed but there is an admission of some guilt," Parsley told the station.
I'll bet you the denials are about use of crystal meth, because that carries some significant legal repercussions. But the meth part of the story rings true to me (although we have no firm evidence of it yet). It's what extremely conflicted and sometimes desperately lonely gay men resort to in order to facilitate their self-destruction, and leave behind any sexual inhibitions derived from crushing guilt. But the hypocrisy case remains. Again from the male prostitute involved:
"It made me angry that here's someone preaching about gay marriage and going behind the scenes having gay sex," he said.
Jones claimed Haggard paid him to have sex nearly every month over three years. He said he advertised himself as an escort on the Internet and was contacted by a man who called himself Art, who snorted methamphetamine before their sexual encounters to heighten his experience.
This is no minor figure. He leads 30 million evangelicals. Here's what his own website says about him:
Pastor Ted has been interviewed by Barbara Walters, Tom Brokaw, Bill O'Reilly, Chris Matthews, and more. Time included Pastor Ted in their list of the 25 Most Influential Evangelicals in America. Harper's says, 'No pastor in America holds more sway over the political direction of evangelicalism than does Pastor Ted.'
I'm afraid I feel for Haggard. This is what happens to a man psychologically and spiritually destroyed by actually advancing a lie he knows to be a lie about homosexuality as a "chosen lifestyle" while being gay himself.
His denial of reality, his inability to cope with the world as it is, is often part of the same fundamentalist psyche we see exhibited at all levels of the Rove machine - and, dangerously, within the president himself. Denial is a very powerful psychic force. When combined with addiction, it can fuel destructive behavior. In a human being, it can destroy a person, a family, a marriage, an entire life.
One more obvious lesson: The religious right's lies about who gay people really are must end. Surely now. The victims are also Christians like Haggard. They are countless kids and teens in places where they are taught to hate themselves, and subsequently act out the psychic damage years later. I am not saying Haggard isn't morally accountable for everything he has done, for the lies he has spread, for the hatred he has enabled. That hatred will now come back to him, like the sorcerer's apprentice whose magic of electoral homophobia soon overwhelms him as well. It's brutal pay-back, as it was for Foley, as it often is for every closeted gay man in the end. In the end, their lives lose integrity; and they know it; and then misery; and they feel it more than anyone.
I'm praying for Haggard, as I hope he is praying for me and every sinner. But the lesson of this to the religious right surely is: go and sin no more. Stop the lies. Stop the bigotry. Deal with the reality of gay people, our souls, our wounded hearts, our humanity, our right to be treated equally by our own government. It's what Jesus did. And it is your true calling now.

What I find sad is that the Evangelical community as a whole will not get the actual message inherent in this event. It's the same one Jesus sent to his initial followers and to all of his followers down through the ages. Jesus never intended for his followers to be superior and judges of others. His message was simple and easy.....a Christian's task in life.....his or her purpose if you will....is to work on their own frailties and shortcomings and thus become a living example. Jesus never intended Christians to be the ones casting the stones.
That's why it is important to come out of the closet. Let people know us by our examples. Most gay people live rather boring lives when all is said and done. It's important for everyone else to realize that we are just people living our lives. We are more alike than we are different.
And apparently, this Haggard was NOT a particularly nasty, self-righteous or judgmental evangelicalist preacher. He may have disappointed some of his flock but hopefully, they'll be able to grow from the experience. But he's hurt himself most of all. Let's hope that this "outing" precipitates a healing for him.
Let's also consider that we do not have enough details to determine how much of the allegations against Haggard are true. The least people can do is give him the same rights libs are demanding for terrorists - that pesky little thing called the presumption of innocence.
What evil people you are to assume his guilt from the limited information that has been released and then use that same assumption of guilt to pontificate against evangelicals.
And no Wendy, if Haggard is born-again, the evangelicals would not be telling him he was going to hell. Acceptance of Christ as his Saviour guarentees him acceptance in to Heaven and God's forgiveness for his sins.
Kristina: I totally understand where you're coming from, believe me, there are nuggets of anger there too, but I guess they are more directed against the system than the individual. I remember what it was like to be vile and homophobic when I was younger because I was afraid if I wasn't then people would find out about me. I can't imagine having to carry that through a whole lifetime: middle school was bad enough.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colorado (CNN) -- The Rev. Ted Haggard, who resigned as one of the nation's top evangelical leaders, admitted Friday he had contacted male prostitute Mike Jones "for a massage" and bought drugs from him.
Haggard said he never had sex with Jones and never used the methamphetamine drug he bought. Haggard told reporters earlier this week that he did not know Jones, who claims to have had a three-year sex-for-money relationship with the pastor.
Haggard told CNN affiliate KUSA-TV on Friday that he received Jones' name as "a referral" from a hotel where he was staying in Denver. He did not name the hotel. "I did call him," Haggard said. "I called him to buy some meth, but I threw it away. ... I was buying it for me, but I never used it. I was tempted, I bought it, but I never used it. ... He told me about it. I went there for a massage."
Earlier, Jones said he would not back down from his allegations despite a polygraph test that a polygraph administrator said showed "deception." Jones took the test voluntarily, answering questions about his alleged ties with the Haggard. Test administrator John Kresnik said the results "did show deception" but that Jones was physically and mentally exhausted. Kresnik said he would like to take the test again after Jones had slept and eaten, which could provide more trustworthy results.
During a radio interview after the polygraph test, Jones said, "I'm disappointed. I won't back down from statements." Haggard told CNN affiliate KUSA-TV on Wednesday, "I've never had a gay relationship with anybody. I'm steady with my wife. I'm faithful to my wife." He added, "I have never done drugs, ever -- not even in high school."
Jones said he has an envelope containing two $100 bills from Haggard, and saved telephone messages from him. KUSA reported that a nationally known voice recognition expert concluded the voicemails left for Jones probably were from Haggard. A more detailed analysis was under way. In at least one of the messages, the speaker identifies himself as "Art." Jones said Haggard used the name Art during their alleged three-year affair, with the last tryst occurring in August. Haggard's middle name is Arthur. Haggard told reporters this week he does not know Mike Jones.
When I listen to evangelicals exhort against homsexuality, they are against the lifestyle. I have never heard an evangelical say Steven, you are beyond redemption if you are a homosexual. Most evangelicals are kind and loving people who believe that lifestyle choices are wrong, not the people themselves. Redemption is always between God and the sinner, no matter what the sin.
So these people speak for God, when they call homosexuality a sin?
My point here is this nanci, You have an Envengelical Minister preaching hate and intolerance, and preaching out that gay people are gay by choice, excuse me, I am Gay and God created me this way, He is still my God, I am just as Christian as you, because I believe God made us the way we are to learn of humanity in all of us, as diverse as we are, we are all his creation, Ministers want you to hate, God would not ask you to do that, Ministers tell you to be intolerant, God would not want you to do that, It is not the fact that Mr Haggert is Bi, or Gay, or even Curious, it is the fact that he says one thing and denies equality for others, but also is lieing to himself, and his congregation. it's hypocrytical !
The bible portion most quoted by Envangelicals, is "Leviticus" "Old Testament" yes it does say that in there, then comes "New Testament" Jesus taught tolerance, and unconditional acceptance and love of others the blood of Jesus washed us all, Jesus wanted us to accept eachother, regardless of our faults, as we all fall short of his glory. Bible thumping aside, I think the Envangelical Right should rethink thier tough stance, and learn from thier own words of forgiveness, and tolerance of others, when religions learn to live the word, and not teach own Ideology's , then maybe we can all "the whole world Live in Peace"
And even if Haggard is homosexual, he is still able, without hypocrisy, to be against homosexual marriage. He is still in a position where God WILL forgive his sins and we should be able to do the same.
He resigned in the face of the allegations. That is all that evangelicals can ask of him. What happens next is up to his wife (who is truly the only one affected by this, if true), his congregation (who have the right to say we do not wish to have you represent us any longer) and his God (who WILL forgive him). It is not our place to judge him.
Jesse, there are some loudmouth evangelicals but most of us leave the judging of people up to God even though we rail against actions. Many of the liberals and non-evangelical Christians appear far more judgemental to me. Thi9s article is a prime example.
I don't give a rats tuckus about what you consider sin. Whether you like it or not, you are not the one who gets to decide whether or not someone has sinned. Unless of course I am really out of the loop and you are the second coming.
I don't know what faith you are belong to, if any, but in mine, the writings of both testaments are the word of God. If someone chooses to do something differently than it was done 5,000 years ago, that's between that person and God.
Some day I suppose you will write something that makes sense and isn't full of vitriol. I guess it is possible that pigs will fly too.
Leviticus 24:16
anyone who blasphemes the name of the LORD must be put to death. The entire assembly must stone him. Whether an alien or native-born, when he blasphemes the Name, he must be put to death.
**It must be tough to cart all those stones around for every person you hear blaspheming.
Numbers 1:51
Whenever the tabernacle is to move, the Levites are to take it down, and whenever the tabernacle is to be set up, the Levites shall do it. Anyone else who goes near it shall be put to death.
**I'm not even sure where to find the good Levites anymore that are still building churches.
From Leviticus:
44 " 'Your male and female slaves are to come from the nations around you; from them you may buy slaves. 45 You may also buy some of the temporary residents living among you and members of their clans born in your country, and they will become your property.
**I guess this gives us a solution to illegal immigration.
Exodus 35:2
For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death.
**No more Walmart. Around here, only Chick-fil-a and Hobby Lobby really support this one. Every one else...get ready to die.
Leviticus 20:27
" 'A man or woman who is a medium or spiritist among you must be put to death.
Also, I hope that you have brought up the issue of having female teacher, judges, legislators, etc with your local government, as well the stores that sell fancy clothes, pearls, gold, or hair braiding services:
From 1 Timothy 2:
9I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, 10but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God.
11A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. 12I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent. 13For Adam was formed first, then Eve. 14And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. 15But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety.
Actually I think that means by posting here and contradicting men, you're in some violations as well. Good luck with that.
You'll probably want to bring up American farming practices as well:
Exodus 23:9-11
"For six years you are to sow your fields and harvest the crops, 11 but during the seventh year let the land lie unplowed and unused. Then the poor among your people may get food from it, and the wild animals may eat what they leave. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive grove.
I bring these up only to point out that no one follows all the rules laid forth in the Bible, no one. Everyone interprets the Bible to an extent. They look for the messages that they see in it. There are bound to be differences in those viewpoints. I guess on some level, we are all taking chances with the way we chose to live our lives vis-a-vis our religious texts; and will have to account for those decisions at a later point.
I live my life as best I can in the context of a society that has lost touch with God. If you don't like my interpretations, live your own way. Your choice.
Sorry. I know it's sorta off topic but I had to get that in somehow.
Monique: I know, it was fun to see that. I like that he came out to squelch rumors that he was straight.
In a letter that was read to the congregation of the New Life Church by another clergyman, Haggard apologized for his acts and requested forgiveness.
"I am so sorry for the circumstances that have caused shame and embarrassment for all of you," he said, adding that he had confused the situation by giving inconsistent remarks to reporters denying the scandal.
"The fact is I am guilty of sexual immorality. And I take responsibility for the entire problem. I am a deceiver and a liar."
NPH is terrific. He came out because his publicist tried to "in" him. lol
Funny remark by Bill Mahre the other night that went something like this....Yes, he decided to have a massage but first he wanted the meth...right, that's the best way to relax, with speed!
Religion Gone Bad:
This Fall's midterm elections will see much discussion about the enhanced power of the Christian fundamentalist Right, leaving many people to wonder: just who are these people and what exactly do they want? What are their ultimate goals? The Reverend Mel White, a deeply religious man who sees fundamentalism as "evangelical Christian orthodoxy gone cultic," believes that it is not a stretch to say that the true goal of today's fundamentalists is to break down the wall that separates church and state, superimpose their "moral values" on the U.S. Constitution, replace democracy with theocratic rule, and ultimately create a new "Christian America" in their image. White's new book, Religion Gone Bad, is a wake-up call to all of us to take heed.

Stranger at the Gate:
There are plenty of clergymen's coming-out stories (most by Anglican priests) and plenty of gay replies to Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and other antigay Christian evangelists, but on both counts, this is the one everybody's been waiting for. Raised in the same mold as those religious-right leaders, White was their colleague and collaborator. He ghostwrote two books for Falwell (including Mr. Moral Majority's "autobiography"), one for Robertson, and speeches for nonclerical gay-baiter Ollie North and the less problematic Billy Graham. Before the ghosting, White pursued a hectically successful career as an evangelical filmmaker, conference and retreat organizer, and occasional preacher. All the while, he, a married man with two children, struggled with homosexuality, which he says he felt from his earliest awareness of sexual consciousness. He lasted 25 years as a committed family man before he and long-suffering wife Lyla agreed he had to come out completely and divorced. Although decidedly egotistical (we especially wish White would say more about his heroic wife), this autobiography is moving, inspirational, and not a little spectacular--which makes it all the more readable.
