I heard this on CNN and looked it up. There is a new campaign from LA's GLB Center called HIV is a Gay Disease: Own It End It. Their rationale for the campaign is that AIDS is affecting gay men more than any other population in the city of LA and they feel gay men (particularly young gay men) have become complacent, feeling it's not a big deal if they contract HIV. Other groups are upset, feeling this sets AIDS activism back 20 years to a time when straight folks felt they couldn't get HIV, because only gay men did.
What do folks think about that? I understand where both sides are coming from; the issue seems quite complicated.
- Do you think the gay community has become complacent about or innured to the impact of AIDS?
- Does this also send the message that straight people are safer from infection?
- Does this promote homophobia?

About other groups - such as intravenous drug users and unwitting wives. They are growing in numbers and it is even more dangerous for them because ignorance keeps them from getting tested and treated. The last figure I read was that about 250,000 people are infected with HIV and don't know it. How that figure came about I don't know. But, if it is true - more needs to be done to stem the tide of an entirely preventable disease.
BTW, this a bit off the topic but it really rubs me the wrong way how people are equating Mark Foley's Creepy Old Guy (COG) behavior with his sexuality. The two things have nothing to do with one another. COGs come from all walks of life! lol
