On This Date in Bush History-11/27: Lies at Justice
2006: It appears that even Republicans are getting tired of the tall tales told by Bush's friend, the Attorney General.
Alberto Gonzales' schedule shows a one-hour meeting today, during which Gonzales is said by aides to have reviewed detailed plans for the firing of several U.S. attorneys. The firings turned controversial when they appeared to have been based not on merit but on White House politics.
The revelation of today's meeting will get Gonzales in trouble because Gonzales had been denying involvement in the firings. Sen. Arlen Specter (R-PA) says reports of this meeting "appear to contradict" Gonzales' claim that he wasn't in "any discussions" about the firings. Specter told NBC's "Meet the Press", "We have to have an attorney general who is candid, truthful". Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) will tell CBS's "Face the Nation" that Gonzales "has said some things that just don't add up".
