Than Sign Up To Fight!
© September 29, 2006 by M. Emmett Townsend
Someone said, in another article I sent in, "This country is 1.5 trillion dollars in debt and soldiers are dying in an unnecessary war. If you are so pro-Bush (who couldn't be bothered to read a memo with Bin Laden in the title) and pro-war than sign up to fight! Put your money where your poetic whiny mouth is."
Now I must say I have not attacked this particular person directly though she was on a set of debated comments with me in the past. And while her comment aggravated me, it also inspired me to write this article. It is not complete and may be missing a date or have a date wrong I wrote it quickly, I will edit as I realize something I missed. Much of this story begins when I was 14, or 26 years ago. Well enough setting the story up.. lets get on with it.
I have been in the military, and I have 5 members of my family currently serving 3 of them over there as we speak. My cousin died in an ambush 4 months ago in Afghanistan, he was a medic setting up clinics for the Afghan people. I have and will continue to donate time to help soldiers who have needs on this side. My sister is a retired Lt Col air force, My brother is Retired Army National Guard, My other sister is Retired Air force Intel, her husband, is retired Intel as well but is now Civilian Intel working for the Air force still, and he serves in the reserves as well all were activated soon after 9/11. My nephew is on his second year activation training troops in Georgia. My cousin David has just returned from Iraq, Brian also a cousin just went to Afghanistan. My father is retired Air force, 23 years Col. and a DR, he served 2 tours in Viet Nam, he volunteered he had a position here at home but felt as a volunteer in the air force he felt he should go since others have been drafted to go (that is called a code of ethics, and dedication and love of his fellow country man, something Kerry certainly never displayed).
When my father retired in the December of 1979 then signed on with International Rescue Committee. So, at the age of 14, I traveled (6 months later) to him, my father, who was in Thailand and we worked in the refugee camps. My father as chief Surgeon and head of the Hosp, my mother worked as a Nurse in one of the clinics and I became an English teacher and also a child play therapist for the children in the Hosp of the Nong Khai Refugee camp. This was a camp of 48,000 people, bigger then many cities here. I have seen war and I have seen what it takes to fight for freedom and I saw what people did for that freedom, how they sacrificed and then once free how they didn't waste a moment they got to work making that freedom mean something. I have also seen what happens when the good guys leave a war unfinished, the additional pain and suffering that involves. Vietnam was a war miss fought and lost because of the liberals and many of there lies, (J. F. Kerry being one of the liars) we worked with Dad for a year then mom and the kids came home to the US dad continued to do this work for 3 more years. We saw him 2 times during those years once for 3 weeks and then he had to head to DC for Hearings in the Senate, and a surprise meeting with William Casey (then head of the CIA) where my father was thanked for the detailed information he gave Washington from refugees about the chemical weapons being used on the people of the Lao Highlands supplied to the Pathet Lao by the Soviets.
So I know a lot about sacrifice for my country and for the cause of righteous war, and defending the people and their freedoms they long for. You see they couldn't say the things we say here on Gather, because they would be harassed or put to death, for it. The same goes for the Iraqi people, they can now, but before we freed them they could not and the number who died from the war is smaller then the number killed each year by Saddam.
My family has fought in every war this Nation has been through, starting with the Battle of Lexington and Concord, where my direct Grandfather fought and his brother covered their retreat and died with 48 musket ball holes in his body. Civil war been there, WW1 been there, WWII been there, Korea been there, Vietnam been there, (We may have missed Granada, but that was a quick rescue mission, but a cousin might have been there), Gulf War been there, Kosovo been there, Afghanistan been there and still there, Iraq war been there and still there. We know war, we know peace and we realize that your freedoms and you times of peace, must be bought and paid for from time to time with our families most precious blood, and we are willing because all of you even those I disagree with are worth it, you lives, your freedoms and your ability to tell me off are worth the sacrifice.
So miss, what was your challenge? Put my money where my mouth is?

FYI, my mode of operation on this site is to return comments on articles that others have placed on my articles. Today I was going through the Pox piece thus came across your comments.
I will admit my comment was bitchy, but it was based on 1) the cut and paste job of the original article. 2) a malice towards a man not longer president.
Best regards, Ben
This adminsitration is corrupt and immoral. That will be proven in the history books.
You should be proud of your service to our country. As I am proud of my devotion to the United States of America.
You said, "I will admit my comment was bitchy, but it was based on 1) the cut and paste job of the original article. 2) a malice towards a man not longer president. "
Well #1 I cut and pasted an article that I felt was important, not because he was president, but because he was trying now to sway the electorate just before the Nov elections, and when he tried I felt he was disingenuous at best and outright lying at worst. (Not arguing the point just stating why I did it. So please don't argue the point here, anyone, do it if you must n the original article)
#2 My malice relates to the attempt with argument and what I think were lies to sway the election. Not because of the past, the past just served to inspire me to write a cute and yes smarmy sarcastic title and the past served to remind me how he lied while in office.
So think for a moment, on what I did from the perspective of this, would it have bothered you so much if I had been talking about Bush? Be honest, you probably wouldn't have given me a negative comment, even if it was a pasted article… I don't mean you want to be hypocritical, I just know I don't attack articles too much when I am already aliened with the premise or opinion of that particular article. Therefore, I assume (daring I know) that you would probably agree, if you thought about it, that you'd probably be a bit like me in this situation. So were not as different as we think at times, and I hold no permanent malice towards you. While I didn't like your manner of comment, it did inspire me to respond and I think I will write on aspects of the article in more details later esp. Thailand and Lexington and Concord. And for the inspiration I thank you, for your kind reading of this article and what you conceded to I also thank you. Let me also concede that I am not always right, and yes sometimes I can get overly emotional when I am writing and thus not be a polite as I wish I could have been.
Shalom,
Emmett
Thank you for your comment and I understand even if I don't agree, I have felt the same about other wars or police actions and other administrations. I respect your disagreement as coming from your heart with no malice for those who disagree. You are a good friend and I am so glad you are here on gather.
Emmett
And while her comment aggravated me, it also inspired me to write this article. It is not complete and may be missing a date or have a date wrong I wrote it quickly, I will edit as I realize something I missed. It is also missing the name of the person you have quoted. Why would you publish an article that is not complete and is missing so much?
You own a writing group that was listed on the front page of Gather. In my opinion, that is irresponsible on their part and this on yours.
Thank you for commenting. So you saw me listed on the front of gather? Great, for me the gather page was not working when I looked. Did the image icon's work as well? I ask because I was e-mailing back and forth with Ben Stephens at Gather about a possible HTML or ASP coding error on the front page and I thought it was the image setup that was causing the problem. Anyhow as for the writing group it is a place for writers, just like a church is for imperfect Christians, we are not perfect we gather in church and as in our group in the hopes that we can become better Christians or writers. And because of that hope, I appreciate the help you've given me with quotes; I do need to better understand there use in relation to quoting someone in an article. Thank you.
The article being incomplete or needing editing for dates relates more to the 26 years I was remembering back to, but I'd rather be honest and say I may need to fix something then just let you assume I think I am 100% in my memory when I know I am not. I would much rather be dammed for what I do, honestly do, instead of being dammed for pretending to be what I am not. (did I use the comma's correctly, no joke I am not sure as I reread this.)
Thanks again for posting Sandy, Hugs

I do think Sandy made a point, though. What is the article you are addressing? I,too, think it is important to be able to read it to see where she may be coming from.
As I reread this response to your coment it sounded sappy, but it is ment honestly so I will still post it.
Emmett
One of my major issues with Bush is that he delegates too much and yes, he lies, and not about whom he is sleeping with, but about stuff that really matters. His administration was planning to go into Iraq before 9/11. Further, I don't think he really is running the show, I think Chaney is behind most of the decisions. In case you are wondering, I don't think this administration was involved in any conspiracy for 9/11 as others have alleged.
I think one thing that leaders need to consider before committing troops anywhere is if the sacrifice of American lives worth the fight. They have a responsibility to only commit troops when other avenues have been explored. Afterwards, they need to think of every soldier in a body bag as either their son or daughter and put forth as much effort to end the fighting as quickly as possible. Bush didn't commit enough troops to secure Iraq even though generals with war experience told him they need more troops. The result was a half plan, where opposition built, and now boarders on civil war.
You are right, it would not have bothered me so much if it was about Bush, but I do admit that it does not make me happy when I see cut and paste articles from non-Bush supporters. I tend not to read these articles, comment or rate them. I am one of the people who does not mind if people have very short articles with little point, as long as the author wrote original material. I think it behooves all of us to actually write what we post. If one must; put a link to the article, that way the person who wrote it, or the publication that paid for it, can get the readers that they would lose otherwise.
Sandy,
I forgot to mention, I didn't put Lady Lisa's name in the article because my point in writing it was not to embarrass or accidentally offend her, it was to address the concerns she brought up. I try to be nice and I suppose I could have been nicer and left out the last line... and In fact I will take out the last line now with an edit.
Thank you Sandy, Thank you June, and Lisa, thank you for allowing yourself to read my point of view, and my we become friend?
I will send a connection request to you.
Thank you all,
Face it, the article you wrote above was a thousand times better than the Clinton post because it was heartfelt and honest. You were defending your beliefs without resorting to anything cutesy insulting 'Slick Willy' kind of stuff. You were pissed at me, and really that is fine. I can take the heat, and you may have noticed, I tend to stand up for myself as well as apologize when I am in the wrong.
Thank you, for your post. I agree with allot of what you said, but I must disagree a bit, we live in a country where we can voice our opinions, even differing ones. Well it is like this even if I disagree; someone with a different view of the right or wrong of the war is helpful. I do not call anyone who disagrees with the war a trader. I do call some who have leaked info that does and can put our troops in more danger then need be traitors... I would call anyone like Kerry and Jane Fonda traitors, her for giving aid and comfort to them, and for Kerry Lying about what he saw happen, calling our troops baby killers etc, frankly if he saw what he said he saw and had not reported it when it happened or soon after then he would be to blame for it continuing. But he didn't see any atrocities except maybe himself shooting at an innocent rice patty and hitting a rock that gave him a cut and then asking for a purple heart for it. I do call generals who are retired at least foolish because they know they should not be playing armchair generals and they do not have the right to ask for Rumsfeld resignation just because they were generals, after all the sec of Defense is appointed by the civil government to make sure we the people through our votes etc control the Military, so the Military can not do what the Thai Military is doing right now that is take over. And this means the old Generals don't have a say except at the ballot box as to weather Rumsfeld stays or goes.
Anyhow, Lisa can disagree with me all she wants, that doesn't make her my enemy, it says to me she does know what's best about our form of government, that she can disagree with it and still live, and even live free, when in so many of the worlds countries you can't do that. Lisa has realized that she can disagree with me, but that I only hope it is done nicely.
When I or members of my family go to war or work in the Military they do it with the desire to protect all Americans, their lives, their freedoms and their property, pretty much in that order. As it says, "Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness".
Thanks again for posting,
Goodnight Friends,
They call it an unjust war because they don't believe freedom is worth dying for.
They complain about the money spent because they would rather see it go to their special interests then to liberating an entire region.
They say 2700 lives have been wasted, only because they know nothing about sacrafice.
Sempr Fi!
He wasn't afraid to have an affair in the sacred halls of our government, on our pay at the time, heck he wasn't afriad to discuss war issues on the phone while reciving sexual favors at the same moment (you can't tell me he was focused on the most important topic at hand...maybe at pants). He wasn't afraid to lie to the American people, he wasn't afraid to do allot of things most Americans find reprehensible. He was afraid to stop Bin Ladden, he wasn't afraid to bomb an Advil factory. He wasn't afraid to give Hillary allot of power in government and allow her to hold secret meetings about our heath insurance programs even though we never voted for her to do anything other then be first lady… In his early years he also wasn't afraid to demonstrate agenst our country in the midst of the Soviet Union…
Some great leader.
Goerge W Bush even if you don't like what he has done, has been unafraid to do what he feels must be done. He is honestly trying his best to preserve and protect our country.
Just because my beard is gray, a smallish gut, can't see or hear well, and can't run down the block without gasping for air is no reason to count me out. What do you think?
Take it easy, and thanks.
