How anyone could call Israel the "holy land" is beyond me.? They have bombed Lebannon into the stone age and then there is this piece from Reutersabout the consequences of war on the environment.? Not that Israel gives a crap about it's neighbors or the land they claim gawd gave them.?? It would appear they can do no wrong and it becomes even more sickening when one sees these kinds of reports.? I hope their gawd forgives them for despoiling the earth, because I doubt anyone else will. It would also be nice to see the Israelis pick up a good chunk of this tab as well, but I won't be holding my breath.

From Reuters:
Israeli jets hit storage tanks at the Jiyyeh plant south of the Lebanese capital Beirut at the beginning of the war, spilling an estimated 10,000 to 30,000 metric tons of oil into the Mediterranean.
"Satellite imagery ... now shows that the oil slick has entered Syrian waters and has already contaminated approximately 10 km of coastline north of the borders between Syria and Lebanon," UNEP said in a statement issued late on Wednesday.

"As long as the Lebanese coastline has not been cleaned there will be a risk for Syria," Murjan said. "We're waiting for the cleanup in Lebanon so we can get started again."
To protect the coastline in the meantime, special nets have been strung in different locations to trap lumps of oil, Hassan said.
Fishing and tourism in the area have been badly affected by the pollution, Murjan noted. "

The oil spill has also destroyed the livelihoods of many of the country's fishermen.
Along with his three partners, Mostafa Azmar, 43, used to catch from 100 pounds to 1,500 pounds of fish a day. Now his boat lies moored in a cove filled with crude oil that burns the nostrils. The wiry, shirtless fisherman looked with dismay at his stained fishing boat and damaged nets.
''The sea is everything to us,'' he said. ''Lebanon wouldn't be Lebanon without the sea, and the sea wouldn't be the sea without Lebanon.''
What also suprises me is what little coverage Aljazeera has given this story. Only two reports since it became an issue.

Apparently they don't consider it newsworthy, which seeing as the spill has reached Syria, one would think it would be taken more seriously.
