I haven't been to a garage sale in years. It's either no money, no time or no faith they'll have anything I truly need. I keep thinking about going to one, expecially after reading about some of the bargains here. The one and only time I had a yard sale, it rained every night which made a lot of work for me.
However, I could really use some money. I still owe $14,000 on my surgery from Jan 08, and really need some extensive dental work. I've thought of a plan, but need your advice on whether it would work.
I love Freecycle and give away quite a few plants every year. This year when I visited some garden centers, I realized that the $1000 worth of plants I'd given away at nursery costs would have been over $4000. I looked into some commercial plant sales operations, but my small yard and health problems don't make those feasible.
My small yard is almost 80% plants in front and 40% in back. I have a lot of about 8 types of plants and enough to take cuttings on another 4 types. Several plants give off literally thousands of seeds yearly. Most are common plants, a few are unusual. I turn down plants and seeds often because I have no room or they don't fit my color scheme.
I was thinking of offering seeds, rooted cuttings, bulbs, rhizomes, small trees and mixed pots of herbs and flowers. Since the majority of these would be plants I normally give away each year, they definitely could be priced low and still be profitable for me.
Would you buy plants at a yard sale? How would you expect to see them priced? For example, if Home Depot or WalMart or wherever has a plant selling at $3 or $5, what price would be discounted enough to tempt you to buy? Does the type of plant matter? Just flowers, just herbs, just bulbs, mostly indoor?
One of my biggest abundance of plants is my groundcover ivy. It's similar to English ivy, only a slower growing with smaller leaves. I like to cut it and place it in vases in the winter, and in the spring and summer I use it for background for my cut flowers. It's a good way for me to prune and get beauty, too. Sometimes they turn out really well. Would people buy these for $2? I'd have to add the price of the vase for a profit there. Or maybe I could start going to garage sales to buy vases.
This may be a pie in the sky type idea, so don't be afraid to shoot it down. While I could probably eventually give them away, I'd hate to have 50 pots each of lavender, rosemary and sedum, dig up all these small trees and shrubs, package and label the thousands of seeds for nothing.

Instead of vases, you may also want to check and see if your local garden store has a deal on plastic gallon containers like you would buy plants at a nursery in. If not, check online and I'm sure someone sells them.
I'd just stick a sign next to the potted plants you sell at the yard sale saying that you have more available.
I love working with my plants, so it's a labor of love. I get enjoyment out of giving the plants away, so getting money for the same plants ought to be a real high.
Best yet, I'll have an excuse to buy a few plants that I haven't had the room or money to spare.
I think it sounds like a good idea;0
