A Swiss daredevil, named Yves Rossy. Leapt from an airplane, at more than 8,800 feet. So he could cross the 22 mile trip; to the English Channel. Amazingly crossing it strapped to a homemade jet-propelled wing!
On Friday, he then parachuted into a field near the white cliffs of Dover. After his 10-minute solo flight. Several hundred spectators rushed to greet the pilot on his landing.
The wing, weighing about 121 pounds. When fully loaded with fuel. Had no steering devices. Rossy moved his body to control its movements.
It also carried four kerosene-burning jet turbines that kept him aloft. He wore a heat-resistant suit to protect him from the heat of the turbines. The cooling effect of the wind and high altitude also prevented him from getting too hot.
I find this just so amazing! The trip across the Channel is meant to trace the route of French aviator Louis Bleriot, the first person to cross in an airplane 99 years ago. Now almost 100 years later. A man is flying across it with a wing on his back! Just simply amazing~~
