Actually that happened to me once it took alot of convincing I think the lady I spoke with didn't understand or pass high school I finally told her to give me the supervisor. Needless to say it got fixed.

Oh wow! I hope they get it fixed right away for you! Maybe they'll try to call it inflation.

I had a similar experience when I called in my water meter read. They couldn't believe it, I had to ask them if they thought I was lying.

That was about 3 years ago though.

Maybe it was 2 years ago. It read less than what the bill said it should. Hhhmm. Where was I?

Oh geesh, and they wonder why we LOVE them soooo much... ugh! Well, trying to send ya some points, 'cause you're gonna need a ton of them to pay that high a gas bill! lol

Sounds like New York State Electric and Gas and the way they operate. Last year, their meter reader never read my meter; just put down an 'estimate' for 8 months in a row. When I got an outrageously high bill of almost $600 more than usual one month, I looked the bill over and found out no actual readings had been taken in quite awhile. A call went out to them to inquire as to what the hell was going on. The representative told me I could take an actual reading and give him the numbers. When I asked how much I was being paid; he was a bit puzzled. I explained since they paid someone to take my readings...and this person hadn't...I expected to get paid his wage for an hour if I was going to have to do the job he wasn't doing. I was told there wouldn't be an actual reading done until the next month and I'd have service disconnected if payment wasn't received...in the middle of winter. I asked if they expected me to pull almost $1,000 out of my arse and threatened to turn them in to the Public Service Commission if something wasn't done immediately and they didn't send someone to take a reading since it was their employee's fault my bill was so high from not reading my meter. Whomever they sent still wasn't doing the job properly. The next bill, which came special a couple weeks later, gave me a credit on gas for being overcharged along with what I thought was a normal electric charge. The next month, my bill was again higher than it usually was; though not as much as the $600 overcharged. The gas portion was more at a 'normal' level, but the electric was sky high. Seems I was undercharged for that the previous months and now they were making up for yet another one of their mistakes. After spending the entire winter holed up in a small back room with the door closed while running a space heater to keep warm and burning only one 60 watt light bulb in the entire two bedroom home for the most part; I refused to go through another winter like that. I kept the heat set at 55 and the home needed weatherization desperately...I had to wear a coat, hat and gloves to cook in my kitchen because it was as cold as the outdoors with me being able to see my breath. My NYSEG bills last winter ran between $250 and $300 a month. I relocated to a small apartment in a city an hour west services by Rochester Gas and Electric...and heat was included in my rent, which was the same amount I was paying for the house I had been living in. My last bill from RG&E - $30.10 for one month...$1 a day for power. Cable, computer service and telephone are also cheaper here. I'm actually saving money monthly now by moving from a small town to a larger city. Hopefully, they can straighten out the problem and not make you pay they amount they've billed you and offer you credit towards your account for months coming in the future.

Oh my i don't think anyone can use all that gas.. I have the same problem with meter readers they always miss us up like light $2.00 i may use energy savor light bulbs should be that low they do it to us evry month about.I got to the point once a week i write down the numbers on the meter...LOL We don't have a gas company we pay to cause we live in a mobilehome park so the park has their own meter readers and we pay the bill to the park with the space rent and other bills.....

We once had a meter reader who sat in his truck and just "guessed" what everyone's meter would read. Once the gas company found out and fired him, they had to get everyone's accounts in order. We ended up owing twice the normal bill for one month. I felt cheated!

Yikes! And my old landlord would get mad at us for putting that caulking cord around his leaky-ass windows in New Hampshire. Sure am glad to be back in CA - we could turn the heat off if we had to and not freeze. Well, most of the time.

Wow! you got a big gas bill this month. You shouldn't let them get away with it. This happened to me this month with my electric bill. They charged me more than they normally do. When I paid the bill, I stated my electric shouldn't be this high since I wasn't home for most of that month.

I'm sorry this happened. I know heating is expensive and gas for cooking and all but this is more than a little excessive. Last year it cost me $600/month to heat the house. This year we are freezing instead and it has improved but still high.

I hope it gets straightened out easily!

Try not to stress over this right now, Austin. A phone call should take care of it. One look at your past few bills and they should realize their error. If not, call the local TV news station and let them handle it.

That is awful, I hope it is fixed quickly. Human errors do happen, nobody is perfect. Let just pray that it isn't a hassle to straighten it out!

I wouldn't have survived long enough to write this article if I got a bill like that. Jesus just opening it would have killed me.

This would make me sick to think I had to wait until after the Holidays to get this mess straighted out. It always seems that the bad news comes from these places on days when they are off. Isnt this convenient for them.

I'm sure you'll get it straightened out... Bills are computerized and a computer can't, like a human, use deductive reasoning to figure out that a decimal point was put in the wrong place... I'm sure once you get a "warm body" to talk to about it, it'll get fixed. Hang in there....

I'm with Elizabeth E. I'd have a stroke, and if I managed to live through it, I would be so worried, with the sword of Damocles hanging over my head until it was all settled and put to right. Here's raising a cup of eggnog to you, hoping that this doesn't ruin your holiday.

Sounds like the Oklahoma eletrict company. Because they refused to insure proper care of their power lines, and the damage that accured because of their neglegence, we will have to pay for all the repairs that should not have been needed. Hell in this state we pay over 40% more than 25 other state for our gas and eletricity.

That's what you get when you pay people minimum wage to go out and read meters. They don't give a shit about their job and don't want to be out in the elements doing it so they just estimate. And if there were any quality checks in place at all SOMEONE at that company an increase of that amount would have raised a red flag and it should have been verified or double checked.

But that's in the perfect world that only exists in our collective imaginations.

I'm sure you'll be able to get it straightened out though. Just don't speak with the first person who answers the phone. I'd immediately ask for a manager or supervisor. Otherwise you'll be explaining yourself and telling the story many times over before you get anyone who can actually understand what you're talking about.
