Does size matter, when it comes to homes? Does the size of the home matter when it comes to being comfortable? We lived in a 10X50 trailer for the first 20 years of our marriage. We raised both our daughters in this very small space. They don’t even make trailers that small anymore. We purchased a new home about 9 years ago. We went from a small tight fit into a nice leisurely area.
Now that our daughters are raised, I wonder if we really need this big of a home. We have 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and so much more but the only time all the bedrooms are used is 4 times a year. With all the talk of going “green” I have been thinking about the size of homes.
There is an elderly lady lives a few house up from us. Her and her husband lived in a beautiful home until he died a few years ago. They never had children. Now she lives alone in this huge home. It has upstairs, downstairs and full basement. It is a really large home.
Then a couple more houses up the road, there is a family, with 5 kids who live in a small 5 room home. Each room is very small and it even has a very small yard. In a perfect world, this family would have a larger home. However, this is not a perfect world. It is a very imperfect world and those who need more are often the ones who do without. Those who do not need more often have more than they could ever use.
I think that “bigger is not - always better”. What do you think?
So my question is Does size matter?
It a persons status, so to speak, judged by the size of their home?

I think the whole idea of "going green" is nice, but it seems that too many politicians use stuff like that to get votes, although they are about the most unlikely people to actually cut back on power usage, etc.!!
Good article!
While there are big families cramped in small living areas because they can afford nothing else. It's a way of life, but I agree.. In a perfect world those with too much would trade with those with not enough.

Our house is a little crowded right now, but would be fine if it had more closet space and/or a garage. 2/2 works pretty well for the three of us.
We are slowly starting to look at buying and there seems to be such a disparity. You get a median priced closet in a not so great neighborhood or you get a mansion on a lot of land. It is frustrating!
Summers at the farm were spent in a two-bedroom house. Four sisters in one room...two double beds. I remember telling stories and laughing so hard we stuffed the covers in our mouths to muffle the laughs so we wouldn't get told to "Quiet down and get to sleep."
Our home in town was bigger--but not much. Everyone shared a bedroom...with 6 kids, that was a sure thing.
Now, my kids all have their own bedrooms, but the two that are closer have next-door rooms in a separate wing and share the same bathroom. Maybe size does matter...and smaller is better!
Call me addicted to Gather...so many great pictures...so many great articles...so many interesting people!
I am lucky enough that each of my kids have their own rooms. One day my teen will be gone. Than we will have his room and my room will be turned back into a florida room or if my husband has his way a throw all in / tool room for him.
