Beware Gather Members,
I just recieved an email from a Gather Member today, and I want to warn you about it. You may have already received a similar email. As a member of MySpace, I have become familiar with this type of email. These people work out of Nigeria, and they have a big scam going on to get your sympathy, your love, and then your money. Many people who are scammed are very intelligent women. I'm not sure if any men have been scammed or not. Here are some clues to look for if you are not sure the person is real or not:
- The grammar is very broken.
- They use odd phrases
- They say they are from Africa, Nigeria, Britain, or any other country, and the writing accent does not match. There may be people from these countries who are legit, so you have to look at all the evidence.
- The photo does not match the writing accent.
- They only have one photo, and the photo looks like a model (They usually steal photos, or get a model's photo, and they also are only to come up with one. Be careful if someone asks for your picture, too.
- They immediately talk about love, and if it sounds too good to be true, it is!
- They immediately give you their yahoo id.
- They want to offer you a money making opportunity, and they'll help you pay for it.
- They want to send you a check.
- They want your phone number.
These are some of the things I came up with. If you can think of any to add, please fell free to do so. If you decide to write someone anyway, and you aren't sure later on if they are real, try to confuse them. One time I asked a person his parents' names, and he said Mr. and Mrs. Smith. Ok, obviously it would be Mr. and Mrs. so-an-so. Start asking as many confusing questions as you can, and do not give out your personal information. I hope this helps.
Here is the email I recieved. Did you get one like it?

The thing I would add to this list is that those who write these letters generally write without capitalizing the words, that to be correct writing would require letters that are capitalized. e.g. they use "i" for "I"
way 2 familiar with these.
but thanks anyway. because i am almost certain there are still a few who fall for it. obviously, they do still operate for some reason or another.
LOL
They say they will send you a check for say $4000 but you have to cash it right away... you keep $1000 and Wire the rest back to them.. what happens... there is no account or they stop payment on the check.. you are out the money.. and all you have is $1000 um.. NO because you are still $4000 in debt.. just don't do it!
There is also another scam out there that some of the groups are sending around. If you refer someone to this online bank you can get $25. Anything online that asks you for your social security... beware.. don't give out info... just don't do it.
Read up on Identity theft.. its very very real!
thanks for the great posting... always glad to hear someone didn't get taken!
Take care.
