I replied to your kind remark on the raccoon article and thanks for the comment. This is interesting reading, your news article here.
I am so ambivalent about the whole points thing and how it affects things. I come to Gather for many reasons and, as I hope you can tell from many of my articles, take time and energy to write some, including some of the health articles. But a community forms for many reasons and having points is automatically going to be a sole motivating factor for some. Is that wrong? That is where I am ambivalent. If they offered a chat option, then I think people would go there and not have their threads go to the top of the Gather "Most Popular" list but there isn't a chat option, is there? So people have no recourse but to chat in threads that accumulate points and put them at the top of the "most popular" list. Still, those chats can be fun, entertaining and a way to build community.
Perhaps I am naive. Anyway, I am trying to think this through and would appreciate any and all input. Really.
I thought this was a site for writers and artists to share, discuss, post works in progress for honest comments. I randomly browse and post here and there/now and then. I am utterly amazed at what gets a 10 that I wouldn't give a 1, and wonder at the true 10's that have been downgraded by the sloshing sour grapes of those less agile in wordcraft seeking to aggrandize their work by diminishing others.
There are some gems out there but there is way too much dross. I block anyone who e-mails me more than once begging for points, and those that say if I can't give them a 10 don't bother voting, get blocked immediately.
