Amy has finally made it home and is still improving. She had therapy at Mendenhall General Hospital and at Methodist Rehabilitation Center. All of this is due to the fact that Amy’s mother had once worked at the Mendenhall Hospital and was loved by the others there. They arranged for therapy there and at the Methodist Rehab Center.
Amy can now answer yes or no by pointing to the yes or no on a sign they have made. She recognizes people and colors. She can point to photos of a boy or girl when asked to. If she is hurting when she is ask where she can point to yes or no until the right body part is mentioned. She can hold her head up, but not for long at a time. It has been a long time since many of the muscles in her body have been used.
There are nodules (not sure about the name) in her throat which could keep her from breathing without the tube in her throat. These should be removed soon. The tube is going to be left in until they know the nodules won’t come back.
Amy is still considered to be in a coma, but closer to coming out of it. She can not walk or talk or eat. When the nodules are taken out she might be able to talk. She might have to learn to talk all over.
I had not mentioned it before as it was minor when compared to when they did not know if she would live or die and then not knowing if she would ever come out of the coma, but her right hand was damaged. It is much better. The whole right side of her body is not responding as much as her left side. She can move her right hand and arm some. At first she could not even straighten the fingers on the right hand. She can do this some now.
Next Wednesday she will be taken to be evaluated for therapy at another place. If she checks out right, she will be scheduled for four hours of therapy two days a week. The therapies at the hospital and rehab center have helped tremendously and it is hoped she can get the further therapy and will continue improving. No one knows what the future holds for her, but it is looking better. Maybe she will come out of the coma soon.
My thanks to everyone who has been sending positive thoughts and praying for her. Please keep doing it.
