This morning, I came to a conclusion. Deer are attracted to me....or perhaps attracted to my 2001 Red Kia Sephia.
For the first time ever, this morning I got motivated to go to the gym nice and early. So I put on my workout clothes, and at 6:30 I was huffing away on the treadmill, wondering the entire time what on earth was wrong with me. After all, I could still be sleeping, or Gathering while I sip my morning coffee. But I worked out for a good 45 minutes, and was quite proud of myself when it was over...despite the fact I was extremely glad that it was over. I felt really good, rather exhilerated, and ready to go about the rest of my day.
So I hopped in my car, and headed home. Traffic had picked up a lot by this time, but was still flowing nicely. I was driving along at around 45 mph, keeping pace with the other traffic on the four lane highway I was on. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw a huge dog getting ready to jet out in front of me. And just as my foot was heading toward the brake, the huge dog was directly in front of my car, not more than 5 inches away....only now I could see that it was no dog, but a huge deer! Thank God it was a very fast deer, because my foot did not even have time to hit the brake. I did swerve into the other lane somewhat in my panic, but avoided hitting another car. What amazed me, truly amazed me was that this deer actually made it across four lanes of heavy traffic, and not one car even slowed down from going 45mph. This deer darted in and out of traffic like an expert until it reached the other side. Another thing that I found amazing is that there are no woods around this place. It is entirely residential and business. I know the poor thing was one of the many displaced deer in our city who lost a home due to the growing construction.
But back to what I said at the beginning. I think deer are attracted to me or to my car. Why? Because this happens to me all the time. I had a big buck with antlers and a smaller deer run across in front of me about a mile from my house awhile back. When I went with my son to check out a college several hours away, we were driving on a mountain road, and eight deer strolled across the road in front of my car...taking their time. Once, my sister and me were heading back from a mountain trip, and a deer ran right out in front of my car, and the same night, a few miles up the road, one was just standing in the road. I had to drive around it.
Maybe they know that Bambi was always one of my favorite movies...and that I am a deer lover. I think they're so beautiful. To see one get shot breaks my heart. And the jar of fresh deer meat my sister in law gave me for a Christmas gift is still in my cupboard and will still be in my cupboard when Jesus returns....(yuck).
I guess the deer think I'm safe to dart out in front of. And so far, it seems that I am...

Your writing is always so wonderful Cheryl.
You wrote an article on them, it is a start so keep watching for them as they continue to watch for you.
Secondly, speaking from a totemic point of view...it's entirely possible that Deer is trying to get your attention. Actually, having read so much of your sensitive poetry, and witnessing your kindness and high community spirit...I'm not at all surprised to find out Deer are drawn to you or vice versa. When I wrote the piece on Deer totem recently, you were one of the first Gatherites that sprang to mind when I posted. I wondered if you'd read it or find it interesting, and sure enough... you did. lol Those deer whistles won't help you online though! 'Course, you are equally unlikely to wreck your Kia while cruising online.
Wishing You Laughter
