There are a lot of sweet Pits that are put down every day. There is just not enough people to adopt them and certainly the bad publicity does not help. Very sad.

This breaks my heart.

So sad. Its horrid that pit bulls have been bred to be the way they are, and are so often destroyed for what it is that WE put in to them.

And even sadder that some people dont realize that for every "bad" pitt there is a 100% sweetheart that just wants love.

Maybe the deal is they really weren't allowed to give it away. I had a dog that was a give away around 4 years ago. He'd been teased and I didn't know it when I got him, figured it out later. He got along with men, women and girls great but had been teased by a boy so he didn't like boys. One day he'd had his shots and didn't feel well and bit my son in the nose. I took my son to the ER. They reported it to the police. The next day when the vet was open I called in to talk about it. I was told I really wasn't supposed to give the dog away, that if it bit once, it would bite again and I could get sued by whoever took the dog, even if I warned the person of the situation. I set up an appointment to get the dog put down. But I loved this dog so much I just couldn't do it. I had a friend on a farm in another state who knew the situation and he came all the way here and got the dog and now it lives on a farm away from all children and is very happy. I had to keep the dog a certain number of days before giving him away, not sure why, he had been vaccinated the year before too. I wish this pit bull had had a happier ending to it's story.

i am glad you did what you did with your dog... i am not to sure about the laws here with biting dogs. i know the family wanted to surrender the dog, since they did not want anything else to happen. i will have to investigate about the laws here in NM.
i know in our shelter all dogs that show any kind of aggression will be put down, no "if's or but's"

I'm sorry there wasn't a happy ending to this story.

I am so sorry. If they wanted to put him down they could take him to the vet and hold him and be there for him till the last minute. I hate when people just don't care enough even to do that. It's the cheap way out what they did. The dog doesn't know what it did wrong and why it ended up in the shelter with all the strange dogs and smells. And then someone just comes and takes him behind a door to face death without his people. Real crappy in my eyes.

i have not thought about this... it makes me cry..... :-(
