From the AP - Susan Atkins, the former Charles Manson follower who confessed to killing pregnant actress Sharon Tate during a murderous rampage in 1969, has a terminal illness and has asked for compassionate release from prison in her final days, authorities said Thursday.
"Compassionate release" would be a quick and painless death, which is what I thought she was asking for, when I first read the headline. She is a prime candidate for euthanasia, if she's going to die of natural causes in six months, most likely still in jail. Her victim, actress Sharon Tate, didn't get much compassion from Ms. Adkins. She carved Ms. Tate's stomach open, killing her unborn baby.
At the last moments of her life, Ms. Adkins should not be free, to be among loved ones. She should serve her entire life in prison, until her dying second. Her 37 years in jail have not compensated for the lives she took, and the changes her crime made in the world.
Are we a compassionate country? We would be, if we put this witch to death, instead of letting her suffer a slow death from cancer. What is the right choice?

My, what a "Christian" thought.
Wasn't it YOU people who forgave George Bush for all of his "youthful transgressions" and began to dutifully worship him without question in 2000?
So, now that this woman has endured what, 35 years in prison, and is dying a slow, agonizing death, what would you "Christians" feel would be a worthy death for her? Shall we pluck her limb from limb? Shall we tied her to a post and rake the skin from her body, then let the vultures tear the meat from her bones, as early "Chrisitan" missionaires did? Shall we place her in an iron maiden? Shall we slowly roll a heavy piece of machinery over her body, starting at the feet? Shall we place her in a vat of boiling tar?
What form of human agony would be "sufficient" for you "Christian" righties, for a person who's already languished for most of her pathetic life in prison?
I swear, as long as I live, I will never understand the twisted mind of the twisted, so-called "Christian right" in this country. The Christ that I was raised to believe in taught "Turn the other cheek." Today's Christ apparently teaches "Kill, murder, torture, slaughter." Quite different. I'm glad I know longer prescribe to the religion, frankly. They have become an abomination.
Didn't ya'll ever consider "there but for the grace of God goes I?" It coulda been you; still could be. Life can deal some unexpected cards.
A con man stole her life just as surely as he twisted her into a murderess. In prison or out, she is at the end of a life mostly unlived. Is she worthy of compassion? Are you? I know that I know that I know if I had to pay pound for pound for all my sins, the weight would crush me. A little more mercy up in here would be nice.
However, as Clark so often points out, there is a separation between church and state in this nation. The state has no business practicing Christian mercy. I;m glad to see that Jim agrees she should serve her time. As for the hateful statements against Ms. Atkins, we are all human. None of us live up to Christ's ideal. Jesus forgives us for these feelings. At least no-one is trying to act on them and kill this woman.
