My man, VP Dick Cheney!
"On the security front, I think there's a general consensus that we've made major progress, that the surge has worked. That's been a major success," Cheney told ABC News' Martha Raddatz during an exclusive interview in Oman.
When asked how that assessment comports with recent polls that show about two-thirds of Americans say the fight in Iraq is not worth it, Cheney replied, "So?" (link to story)
Ya gotta love this guy. The Congress, and the American public supported the deposing of Saddam Hussein, before we did it. War is not something a nation can do "halfway," once comitted to. The lessons of Vietnam have been learned, and those mistakes will not be repeated today. Both Hillary and Obama have said as much, in one of their early debates. Neither would promise to have "all" troops out by the end of their first term. Most people understand that, even as the situation gets better in Iraq, our continued presence is essential.
Cheney knows this, and also knows the loaded nature of the poll numbers Ms. Raddatz cites in her question. "Not worth it?" That isn't a judgement that us "average Joes and Janes" get to make. We elect leaders to do what they think is right, and our only way of changing policy is to elect someone else. "Lame duck" is the distinct flavor of his response, and I find it delectable.
Thanks to Cheney, for saying it "SO" bluntly.

I think there was much tongue-in-cheek in what Christopher said and it shows in the lame duck comment at the end, Do you really think Christopher thinks of himeself as an "average joe" who is not entitled to exercisce his own judegement about important matters. He does it quite regularly from what I have seen.
Of course, they are supposed to follow the mandate of their constituents but sometimes, we need leaders who have the guts to do what we otherwise wouldn't. In this case, that means not letting the Iraqis twist in the wind as the liberals want them to do. Clearly the party of the left didn't learn a single thing from our withdrawal from Vietnam and they haven't noticed how anxious the terrorists are to have a democrat take the white house and give them free reign.
I'm with Cheney - So?
Here's a hint: It's going to continue, whether we leave or stay in Iraq.
It is strange that I can agree with this administration's Iraq policy, and disagree so strongly with their domestic border policy. Unfortunately, the people who don't want their tax money spent on "border security" are a majority in Congress, making it easier for VP Cheney to say "SO?"
Harry: "Dick, you just shot me!!"
Cheney: "SO???"
Guarding our borders is a matter of law enforcement rather than national security only to those who want to catch those "criminal illegal immigrants"! There is a whole branch of military service, the Coast Guard was established to guard and defend those portions of our borders that are accessible by sea. It members are authorized to intercept and detain people attempting to bring themselves and/or goods into this country without going though the proper procedures. For a brief period of time, before their presence in Iraq was deemed more important, Bush used National Guard troops to guard our border with Mexico.
Cheney is arrogant, the entire administration is arrogant. 'So what' if the people don't agree should not surprise us. They did not like the first 4 years and they re-elected us, so what indeed!
Bush is learning from him. His curve is flat but he is coming along. Too bad it's almost over.
Cheney and Bush are the real threats to the United States. If these two would have had the intelligence to marginilize this once small group of fanatics instead of elevating them to legendary status, our fighht would be over. By making Al-Qeada an attractive cause for disaffected mid-eastern men who have lost all they have because of Bush and Cheney's policies, we now have the huge, unified, deadly and experiencied enemy Bush claimed they were before they were anything but. To put it in his language: Heck of a job boys.
I think you have confused the Presidential election and "American Idol". Nowhere in the Constitution does it say that elected officials have to consider our opinions when making decisions. "American Idol" is where you are consulted before a winner is chosen.
Based on the quality of "American Idol" winners so far, I think the Constitution has it right.
I do have to respect his not caring what the public thinks, as personally, I don't care what anyone thinks either, particularly since I learned long ago that you're damned if you do and damned if you don't, so I do what's best for me and mine. SO??
Here's my response to absolutely EVERY single response you've ever given on Gather :
"So?"
(I give special thanks to one eloquent politician for saying it so succinctly - thanks Dick.)
LOL
I really get a kick out of those who claim, "he's elected, he can do ANYTHING unless we impeach him." There is political fallout for jerks who ignore the will of the people and payday is coming in November. So?
Bush/Cheney have just about done everything you could ask of them, all McCain can do is just sit around and keep an eye for anymore bad guys lurking around trying to start trouble and admire the well done job that he and his party have almost finish.
I just don't understand what those liberals are so upset about with so much peace and prosperity happening everywhere, new democracys popping out here and there.
Now, what do you think those liberals can do with perfection. They" just can't handle the truth."
With the return of the republicans to power, who could better handle items like the market down turn, housing foreclosures, gas prices, oil prices, pollutions of the enviroment, jobs decline, healthcare cost out of control, crime, abortion, drug use and the cost of prescriptions, taxes suffer by small business and the suffering wealthy, immgration out of control, and repair of the nation infastructure as just as few of the minor issues to deal with over the next few years ahead.
Don't you just wish Bush/Cheney could stick around another 4 yrs and finish what they started for a better America for all. For sure, sounds great and the war will be over by then and those terrorists will learn a valuable lesson. That they can't mess with the stars and stripes.
The price for freedom is never to high price to pay and all I can conclude is, I'll sure miss old Bush/Cheney when they have gone. But I'll welcome Sen. McCain with open arms to take over a continue the Republican dominance of glory in the capital, Washington, D.C. the seat of power of the union.
"Honey, honey Barak wake up you were sreaming, what was it? Another nightmare, you just keep repeating bush/cheney, bush/cheney. I told you stop watching the news and listening to Rush Lambaugh, take a break and I'm sure you'll be able to get a good nite rest if you do, O.K. the nation needs you to be alert for cabinet meeting tomorrow, now go to sleep," said Michelle Obama before she return to sleep herself.
A lot of us sit around and think just how nice it is that we haven't had any major attacks since 9/11, and we're pretty happy about that.
A lot of us sit around and think just how nice it is that we haven't had any major attacks since 9/11, and we're pretty happy about that.
Gave me a break the amount of taxes I pay and the claim that the U.S. has out spent every nation on earth with the best this and this best that and some crazy ass Tim McVeigh soldier of fortune blow of a federal building and some Arabs with box cutters hijack three airliners. Bret I expect better, no I demand better. Five years plus with no end insight and you except this excuse of a government and military as a job well done. No Bret people should have brought up on charges fire from their position of responsiblity. No Bret this wool that got pulled over your eyes is not exceptable by me.
I'm piss off did you see Bush's War the past two days on PBS Frontline. I don't care what your political flag might be but Rumfield and Cheney, my god Bret you sitting around thinking how nice things are and you'er pretty happy about happy about that. All I can say how sad, you best get off your ass and look around shit happening everyday in your own back yard. Again the amount I pay in taxes the amount we all pay they should be doing a better job or get fired for their por performance.
"It's better to say nothing and appear stupid, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt."

I guess you missed the Warner Amendment to the last Republican Congress's last military spending bill that gutted posse comitatus, huh? This administration could declare an emergency, and use the guard or regular troops, however he saw fit, but then, Bush has never been the least bit interested in the influx of illegal immigrants, except to try to give them immunity.
"No Bret people should have brought up on charges fire from their position of responsiblity."
So why haven't they? Aren't both Houses controlled by angry Left Wing Democrats howling for Mr. Bush's blood?
So where the hell are the charges?
"All I can say how sad, you best get off your ass and look around shit happening everyday in your own back yard."
I hear all the yowling, Richard, but I also see no new 9/11's. I'm results-oriented, so those results make me happy.
HuffyPost is just an opinion site, not a source for anything except Left Wing venom.
The Guardian, however, is a source site.
Use Guardian, or any other site that hires fact-checkers. That way you won't appear to be a Leftist sleazebag.
Says you, deekhead. Your OPINION of the Huffington Post just reflects the fact that they continually expose the kinds of lies you use as the foundation of your arguments here. No surprise you hate them. By the way, interesting week in Iraq, eh?
