The recalls that have surfaced just the last couple months have me very concerned. I have thinking and wondering just how we as American’s could let this happen. I remember when I was a child that things were made in the US. I remember hearing people say “This is made in Japan or China and it is cheaper”. Evidently that was the beginning of the importing of items from overseas. The little “junk” items were cheaper but they did not last as long as the same items made in the US. So I am wondering, How and when did we as Americans begin to accept the items from overseas?
I am betting that most Americans have no idea where the food that they eat come from. Do you know where your food comes from? If you notice on the package it may say where it is from but is that the true place. Grain is raised and then used to make flour. The flour may not even mention where the grain came from.
Much of our fruits are not raised in the US. Of the fruit that is raised in the US, what chemicals are sprayed on the trees or the fruit itself? Does these affect our bodies?
Take for example, milk. Where the milk comes from does not clearly tell us where the food comes from that the cows eat. The food that the animals eat do affect us. Where is our meats coming from. I don’t mean where is the meat grinded or mixed to package but where does it originate from. How about our eggs, what is the chickens being fed that produce the eggs?
Have you thought of this. I have heard that the reason animal meat does not taste as well as it used to is because the demand is so great that the animals have to be given steroids to be mature enough to butcher for sale. So what is these steroids doing to our bodies? The meet label does not list steroids because it is not added to the meat after it is butchered. It is added to the animals diet.. So it is not required to be listed on the ingredients.
This article is not intended to scare anyone but to begin a discussion on the origination of the products that we consume. If we are going to get anything done to keep our families safe from the recalls and hazards that we don’t know about, we are going to have to stick together. While we are concentrating on the lead in paint, we are not concentrating on other hazards to our families lives. Is that what the FDA wants us to do? Are we doing exactly what the government wants us to do by using our energies on the recalls with lead in them?
What is your opinion on the recalls?
Where does our food come from? Do you know?
Do you raise your own fruits and vegetables?
Do you raise your own animals for your families meats?
It appears to me that the government is more concerned with invading other countries than they are with the citizens of the United States safety. What do you think?

I agree that it is a form of terrorism. It is working too. The citizens of the United States are scared with all these recalls. Seems to me that they have us right where they want us.
That is great but is the fresh produce available year round where you live? It is not in our area. We have really bad winters here so no local fruit in winter except some apples that have been stored or fruits that we ourselves have preserved by canning them.
We too have been sticking with the seasonal foods lately. Our garden is over for the season except for winter onions and leeks.
I do not purchase any fresh fruit or vegetables from foreign countries, if that means we skip on them oh well. As for frozen I look at the packages I have been known to put back frozen veggies because it said "product grown and packaged in Mexico".
hecho en México =Made in Mexico
And I do not purchase that.

What is your opinion on the recalls?
Very scary. I think this is just the start of it.
Where does our food come from? Do you know?
I'd like to think US, but I am not sure, I look at all packaging to make sure it said priduct of USA, but I am not convinced at all that what I purchase is 100% USA.
Do you raise your own fruits and vegetables?
If I had land I would.
Do you raise your own animals for your families meats?
No I can't do that. I eat very little red meat, chicken and Pork as it is.
I think that the antibiotics given to animals are the greatest concern with so many resistent bacterial infections going around. Other than that, I think we can look to see and smell if something is fresh.
Normally I try to stick with fresh, but last night I ate ramen, which is loaded with msg and I couldn't sleep all night with a headache.
You pose some thought provoking questions.
Until about 10 years ago, we raised our own pork for butchering. The pork you purchase in the store has no taste compared to fresh home raised pork. We knew what our animals were fed and always grain fed them for weeks before we butchered them.
As a child, we always raised our own animals for milk, butter, cheese, buttermilk, eggs and for meat. The taste is so much better.
They scare me. I look at all my children's toys now and wonder if they are safe. Some of them were actually on the recall list but once I typed in the require numbers to see if I needed to send it back, I was told the recall did not affect our toys. How do they know? If they used lead paint on one Diego toy with the number 111 on the bottom why would they not use the same lead paint on the same Diego toy only with the number 222 on it?
Where does our food come from? Do you know?
I need to pay more attention to this. I know we had fish from China in our freezer when you did the article on the cancer causing chemicals in them. We just don't have the luxury to drive around (with two kids and very little money) to try to find fish (or other things) that come from specific places.
Do you raise your own fruits and vegetables?
I raised some of my own veggies this summer and plan on raising even more next spring/summer.
Do you raise your own animals for your families meats?
I wish I could! I so would!
It appears to me that the government is more concerned with invading other countries than they are with the citizens of the United States safety. What do you think?
I agree totally. They're also more concerned with making money for themselves, their relatives, and friends.
And you're right, many products claim they are "Made in the USA" when in fact, they are not.
I would grow more food if Michigan had a longer growing season.
They sell plant bulbs. They are light bulbs that put out the same as the sunshine does. You have to keep them on for so long each day. You must also turn them off so long as to give the plants the illusion that it is day and night. You can purchase them at walmart or other home centers. You can buy the entires light set or just the bulb. You can use the bulb in any existing light. It does have to be so far and so close from the plant for it to work properly.
"Globalization" has a lot to do with these recalls. If the whole world is our store, what can we do? Nothing. Best stick as close to home as possible.
