I was more than a little upset on Monday night when I went to an online search to check my voeter's registration staus. No recor of me ever having registered was on file with the county I live in now.
When I moved to this state, I got a new driver's license and registered my car. When i was almost done with the process, the person at the DMV who was helping me asked me, "Would I like to be declared as an organ donor?" Yes. Would I like to be registered to vote? Yes. How did this happen where I was not registered to vote? What would have happened if I had waited until Nov. 8th to figure this out? What other people came to school this year and did the same thing I did thinking they were good to go and fully registered only to show up to vote in a month to find that they don't have the right to vote? I'm mad. I'm livid.
So, I went to the City Hall and registered again for good measure (better safe than sorry) with the League of Women voters and I told them my story and they said that I would have been granted a reciept, a proof of registrtaion if I had truly been registered. Why wouldn't the DMV take care of that? Im so pissed.
I really think it's time this country did something about the voter turnout. In countries where the government automatically registers its citizens to vote and provides a national holiday where no one works and plenty of public transportation is provided, you see turnouts of 85% or more!
What this country is afraid of is that the American public might actually wake up someday and see what a screwed up system we have and they might try to change it, meaning that most of the poeple working in Congress now will be replaced with those who beleive in true democracy, true government for the people and BY THE PEOPLE, meaning that they actually have to show up and vote for the government to be "by" them!
Anyway, I really hope you all were able to register successfully by yesterday as it was the deadline and I hope you are all able to find your way to the polls. Voting should begin in the next two weeks, so you have plenty of opportunity to vote, even if you can't go on the voting day, you can for sure go early!
