Coming home today I was looking at the flowers. My neighbor spent a fortune on landscaping and while the roses were blooming, I still can't fathom why they planted the red bushes with salmon and pink bushes between them. I admired my blooming Rose of Sharon bush, spotting a yellow butterfly. I watched as the butterfly flew parallel to another yellow butterfly and was thinking about how glad I was to be able to watch them.
Suddenly a mockingbird swoops in. While I'm wondering if he was aiming for the butterfly, he turns and grabs it, landing in the street to feast. My first reaction was shock, then I realized that I'd viewed up close Nature's way. I'd never thought about the birds I was happy to attract eating the butterflies I was happy to attract. I have several inches of leaf mulch across most of my yard that gives the birds a good hunting ground for insects. I never thought about them needing more.
From now on, I'll think different thoughts while watching the birds or butterflies.

I am a buddhist and look at all life as sacred, even the smallest bug. One day, my cat, Louie, caught a fly, and he was playing with it in the kitchen. I went to take it from him, and he grabbed it and ran away to snack on it. I went after him and then I thought - Should I save a fly, or allow Louie to be a cat. I opted for the latter, less interference in nature. Your story reminds me of that time, when I was shocked at my kitty for being so cruel, but then realized that all beings have a right to be just what they are, even if they are predators!

I hate to think of a beautiful butterfly being food for a bird but it is natures way. HH
