Recently, I downloaded some more images of historic costumes from Dover Publications.

I love the copyright-free images that Dover sends from time to time.

My favorites are the men's formal clothes.

I think men have been short-changed in the fashion department for a long time. Suits and ties are such a bore, and the current casual look of dirty looking whiskers, baggy pants and t-shirts are so ugly. The old Roman toga or Nehru style look so much more comfortable. I guess the toga looks too comfortable and exposes too much male knee - not a best feature of men.
In women's fashions, I love the long graceful dresses and the mystery they kept of the bodies they covered. But can you imagine the bother and confusion involved in the cases of attacks of passion when in the company of their lovers? Layers and layers of buttoned or hooked corsets, petticoats, etc.

Thanks for saying nice things about men, Ruth. I don't pay a lot of attention to men's fashions, but they don't seem as interestng as women's fashions. A toga would be really comfortable I think.

You're right, Bill. Ruth mentioned the same thing about it taking an age for women to complete their dressing.

I think the men don't have as much variety as the women have.. they get looked at funny if they dress too far out of what society views as "normal." Women can get away with anything and look okay. It is interesting how dressing has evolved over the last 200 years.

Beautiful! I'm sure glad we don't have to be as fussy today though - but it certainly did strike a nice image.

I think you're right, Charlene. But I don't think most guys mind very much. Most guys like a few comfortable things and don't need to have a lot of variety in their clothes.
