Once upon a time, in a kingdom known as The Internet, there dwelt a quaint village called Gather. Now, this place wasn’t very large as such villages go, but it touted itself as a community with higher ideals.
The leader of this village, known only as The Crone, was proud of the smallness and exclusivity. In her mind, it was only for those that considered themselves “serious” inhabitants only. In the beginning, those who were not fitting within this ideal were largely ignored.

But alas, as most small environs in The Kingdom discovered, growth must happen and revenue must be made. The doors of the village of Gather were made wide for those of differing backgrounds than the original Gatherers. Thus began the influx of those who were Agents of Bzz, Jokesters, Writers of Middling Talent (as they were judged), and The Recipe Sharers.

This mass infusion angered and saddened the Crone and her Minions. They ignored the Kingdom’s mission which was “Gather is a place for you to connect with people who share your passions. It's a place where you can contribute thought, art, commentary, or inspiration. We will reward you for all the great things you will share with others in your communities of interest. And together, we think we will create a pretty special place to hang out online.” Nowhere in The Kingdom’s message was a decree that all who write must follow the Crone’s pronouncement that the village was for those with only solemn purpose.
They began a campaign of visiting these new villagers and leaving remarks with hurtful connotations, though they claimed this was not their intent. Several minions decided they would like to see several of the villagers off themselves in a suicide pact, but this was not to be.
The new villagers, chagrined by this hatred disguised as satire, decided that banding together would be their best hope against the evil. In this, they were mistaken.
What had started out as embers, became an all consuming conflagration- burning all. Gather was now divided as never before. No one on either side was willing to honestly meet the other halfway in resolving the disputes. Many of the new villagers who had once thought of some older members fondly, had seen enough, and decided to join with others of like minds: that Gather was a place for all, regardless of talent or content. (Although they all agreed that Spam in any part of the community was not acceptable). However, they were disappointed indeed.
Sadly, children, this fairy tale does not have a happy ending. No one lives happily ever after.
And thus, the war rages on……

Great article Shannon
Whatever you call it Kenneth, most of us want it to end. But how?
out
(And the spam reference was a JOKE)
That's the idea, Nat!
I've had enough of this myself and I hope this is the last word on the subject.
but your right, it does need to end.
Thanks, Andy. I know I can count on your support.
Thank you, June. It will NOT be easy, but I think "peace" is the way.
Tonia that was the most priceless comment :)
I am with you.
Pay no mind to bad seeds...
Focus on all the good people here whether we like all the same things or not
at least we respect each other
unlike the DARK SIDE...
Great article Shannon, you the woman
Shannon in my eyes (as far as they can see in our little cyber community) it has always been my impression that you are a sweet soul. You made a comment within this tale that rings so true that if it resounded throughout gather it alone could end such trials.
"No one on either side was willing to honestly meet the other halfway in resolving the disputes."
We who have come to enjoy this site came with dreams. Some came with dreams of sharing who we were and what we thought. Others came with burning fires in us of writing poetry or stories. Few came with visions of contention and demeaning our community.
Some of us were faced with those who felt lead to hurt us, to drive us away. Their tactics were ones that left the community wide eyed and horrified by such words of wounding. When one is wounded they tend to forget their dreams, their character, and their civility.
If I could have one wish for Christmas it would be that all of those who came with dreams would learn to answer hate with love, anger with civility, and demeaning with an attitude that does not give back that which they receive. I would wish that we could all teach those who do not understand the meaning of kindness -- kindness by our own actions and comments.
Your recipes are a joy to many who come here. Those who muse bring happiness to all who seek musing. Our storytellers delight the hearts of both young and old with their wit, humor and talent. Even some of our political speakers are gifted with a talent of voice that neither demeans nor accuses. These are the spirit of the Gather community. Let us leave those who wish to hurt to their own devices. When they can no longer wield the sword to wound they become powerless and the sword becomes ineffectual.
I hope you understand what I am trying to say. We need not to give them recognition for hate. We need to recognize the good of gather. Empower those of us with dreams rather then empowering those who would bring ruin to our community. Let us all bring our power of word to the goodness of gather and let the light dispel the shadows.
This is my goal for gather, to become light in the darkness, articles that uplift, inform and entertain. I will not longer let the darkness feed off my dreams, rather I will make my dreams dispel those things that would seek to destroy them.
I truly feel that no matter how hard anyone tries from this point further, it will not be said better, it will not be said with more honesty or respect or civility.
For once, EVERBODY, whether you agree or not read and re-read what Amber just wrote, if no other reason than the fact this is a time of year to come together and put aside our differences.
My hat's off to you Amber, you are a gem!!
I wish it would all go away. I've hated what's going on here right from the very beginning. I wrote an article on this back in the summer. I just think that those who started this war got a lot more than they bargained for. They just picked on the wrong people.
I thought about this the other day. It's kind of like the bully who poked a stick in the ant pile. You KNOW how ants are. You touch one.. you gotta fight them all. Then everyone around gets bitten and it STINGS!
i think that this is one of the finest attempts of flag waving that I have seen around here in a long time! I love your writings and your recipes, though I tend to mess them up and discolor them, and look forward to your comments each day!
Though my current train of thought tells me to JUST STAY OUT OF IT ALL, I had to jump in on this one and say right on!! At least you told the story in a clever and thoughtful manner. We should all take note of that in all that we say!
The ending is really happy. There are no wars; they are merely entertainment shows without which the village would not be quite lively.
Gather is a pretty special place for all.
CK, you always "have my back" and I appreciate it. RESPECT is all that I am asking for. Respect for those with different interests and talents.
Amber Fire, I think you really understand what message I was trying to convey. I will do my damndest to be civil to EVERYONE, regardless of differences in opinion. Let's focus on the positives!
Todd, thank you for stopping by. I appreciate your comments. And I plan on taking Amber's words to heart.
Linda, you are another gather friend that always has my back! I appreciate you, and your words! Maybe now the bullies know that no one is backing down and we can peacefully coexist!
My newest gather friend, Rene. I appreciate your compliments. I hope that everyone sees my message in the way that you did.
Oh, Serina! I LOVE that one! I think a few of us are hoping for peace. We'll see what happens.
You're right, Dolphi. And that's one of the points I tried to make. Gather may be small, but it's big enough for everyone regardless of our interests.
Debra, Debra, Debra. Always great to have you stop by and support your friends. We can always rely on that!
May peace reign over the kingdom and all the villagers have a wonderful Holiday!
Thank you for your comment, Sue. I think you and I are much alike in our personal goals for gathering. We ALL have something to share!
We all just have to agree to disagree and move on. But like you said, it's not going to happen. We'll never meet in the middle, ever.
With that being said, I'm off to flame a few people...ruffle their feathers a bit and call it a day. *smooches*
