I got in what turned out to be a very heated debate with a friend last night over what the greatest album of all time is.
There have been tons of great albums put out over the years, What would you consider to be the greatest album of all time? An album that is to some extend timeless and can transend groups of people and time.
My vote: Abbey Road- Beatles
What do you think the best album of all time is?

perhpas "Arrival " by Abba...
another possiblity "Bridge over troubled water" by simon and Gafunkel..
"Tapestry" by Carol King
Twould probably be more productive to ask "What is (are) your favorite album(s) of all time".
1. The Greatest Hits by The Eagles
2. Thriller by Michael Jackson
3. The Wall by Pink Floyd
4. Untitled (IV) by Led Zeppelin
5. Back in Black by AC/DC
What about Fleetwood Mac Rumours? I'm not a big Beatles fan, Emily, so it isn't one of my favorites, but I know many who love that album.
Either of Glenn Gould's recordings of the "Goldberg Variations"
Pablo Casals recordings of the Bach cello suites.
"Robert Johnson, King of the Delta Blues Singers"
"Live at Massey Hall"--Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie et al
The John R. T. Davies remasterings of the Louis Armstrong Hot Five and Hot Seven recordings
It's hard to pick my favorite Hank Williams compilation
Lefty Frizzell's Jimmy Rodgers tribute album
Anything by the Louvin Brothers. The best cover on any of their album is the one from "Satan is Real."
I could go on, but space and time limits are catching up with me.
Lori, it means we are all OLD. [g]
Spencer T
auntie smedley
Shaunee Carter

and if I could remember the answer I would probably have to categorize them all.
artist value even if not that many albums were sold?
popularity of the actual artist?
and don't forget everybody's taste is different
the criteria I used was originality and influence...
Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band was the eighth album by The Beatles. It is often cited as the most influential rock album of all time by prominent critics and publications, including Rolling Stone (which put it atop their 500 "Greatest Albums" list in 2003). It was recorded by The Beatles over a 129-day period beginning on December 6, 1966. The album was released on June 1, 1967 in the United Kingdom and on June 2, 1967 in the United States.
On release the album was an immediate critical and popular sensation. Innovative in every sense, from structure to recording techniques to the cover artwork, the artistic effect was felt immediately and influenced nearly every pop-rock album that came after it.
