This post is directed to whoever the person is that ranks my articles a "1" whenever I deal with content that offends their sense of propriety (actually, I'm only guessing that's the reason).
In each case, the only visible comments made on my posts are the people who read me and comment regularly on what I write. We are engaged in a conversation about content and occasionally, style of writing, which for me is the primary motivation to keep writing on Gather.
Occasionally I will get a comment by someone new, who may have a question about my content, my writing ability, or by someone who may challenge my politics. I enjoy this type of encounter and appreciate the fact that this person felt moved enough to write a comment, even if it was to challenge my point of view.
However, occasionally (it will be obvious if you do the math) that someone will just rank and article a "1" and never indicate why they did that. I can take criticism and enjoy a good fight every now and then but the cowardly jerks who just give "fly-by" rankings without ever leaving a comment or engaging you in some way I find the most frustrating aspect of writing on GATHER.
I don't know if there is a solution to this problem, but I hope if that person or persons are reading this, they will recognize themselves and quit their cowardly behavior.

I have been posting chapters of my on going memoir in a strand called SIX GENERATIONS OF FIRST BORN WOMEN. Let's just say I have not led a "conservative" life.
The other articles are random in nature and I post them under a strand called FLOTSAM AND JETSAM.
I also don't do poetry.

About the ratings, I think the anonymous ones and twos are the work of a small group of nasty people who get a cheap thrill out of throwing rocks and hiding their hands. Maybe we should consider the low ratings a rite of passage for those of us who participate often enough to get noticed by people with nothing better to do.
If I rank it's always good otherwise I wouldn't bother. I agree that an overall revision is way over due by Gather.

I'm pretty sure you're being "nicked" by the neosheep. I now get such visits routinely, even had a totally inoffensive article "flagged". This commenced immediately after I made a series of strong statements against the neocons.
people that will sometimes make absolutely idiotic comments teasing ,testing limits
and most of the time , well i think almost all will be people without a profile or published articles..
best to do : ignore!
keep on writing and what we can do as a community is to rate up and wash those cowards out!
And I don't even know how the ratings work. I am very "political" Some are satirical, most are factual, but all are hit high and low. I welcome balanced and intriguing dissent, or differing points of view. But I know when and who give me the low ratings. Their comments can be pretty radical...

The importance given to ratings will make its misuse more fun to "fly-by" raters. It would be best to ignore them.
i forwarded the bug report to gather.com so they can look at the rating problem.
it could be a print problem, where they print the 1 of the 10 and just not the zero behind it. dunno.
i never rate an article a 1. i rate it a 10 if i think the subject worthy of discussion.
