I would like to be a better writer. I know I don't have the vocabulary. It would take too long to really increase my vocabulary and I know I won't take the time to try. I have always felt that I could communicate to people what I want to express, but know that to a writer or critic that my language is not good enough. I know that I am not good enough to even want to be critiqued. My spelling is horrendous and even with a spell checker sometimes I can't come up with the correct spelling. Sometimes I have to change the wording of a sentence because I can't spell the word I want to use.
I always thought I had a good imagination, but I can't come up with original ideas for a story. I can relate something that has happened and get my point, if I have a point, across. I try to write the way people talk. That comes more naturally to me, but most people I know don't talk using proper English. I know I use too many contractions to suit a critic, but that is the way I normally talk and I write the way I talk to a certain extent.
How do you get the imagination to come up with stories? I'm to old and impatient to spend many hours trying to come up with the ideas that I need.
There have been a few people on Gather who have prodded me some to do a better job when writing. I have appreciated this and the way it was handled. No real critiquing or criticizing, just mainly hints and offers to help. I am going to name a few who I remember. Jim Ross has hinted a couple of times so subtly that at first I did not even recognize it. Donna has been extra nice in the way she has tried to help. The way Sandy has handled a few remarks has impressed me. I don't know if Sandy even remembers me.
I don't even know why I'm writing this. I just thought that writing about what I was thinking might help. I haven't even decided whether to publish this or not. I do wonder what responses I would get, if any.

Just remember what happened when you were absent for a short time, MANY noticed you were gone and missed you.
=0)
Writing takes a LOT of effort, a LOT of rewording and revising. Some of the articles I have published though short they may be I spent many long hours going over again and again. Changing this, rewording that, looking in a Thesaurus for a better word, searching for words I use too often.
First drafts are always rough drafts, and sometimes the first 100 drafts are pretty rough too. Be patient, take your time, go over it and redo things as many times as it takes until YOU are satisfied.
You do just fine William or else you would not have left such a mark on so many people here so stop picking on yourself!
William, I dont think unless you are a real awful writer, i dont think gatherer's will be to harsh on you.
hop
Hop, that information will be helpful if I start writing more seriously. Thanks.
William, when you write about something that happened to you or something you witnessed, the content is lways entertaining or very touching
So do what Clay suggests. Read a lot and write a lot
And listen to Debra...........stop putting yourself down!
I am not a great writer, but I really enjoy reading. It has been two months, and I still do not have enough points for a gift card. I read too much, and very rarely write anything. I enjoy your personal stories, they give me a glimpse into your life, and I enjoy that.
(Just relax on your insecurity about writing abilities, you are doing fine.)
I'll be looking forward to reading whatever you write next.
Thank you, Deanna.
I appreciate that, Linda.
So to hell with those that think they are perfect. I do the best that I can and so do you. Your writing is great.
As for coming up wth ideas I have some odd suggestions. I will send them to you in a message just in case you don't check back here for anymore comments.
and my novel's first 7000 words here:

As for a lack of creativity in subject matter, the old adage about "write what you know" is still great advice. Sometimes I like to play little mental "what if" games to come up with an idea. For example, My Front Yard Trees was the result of the thought "what if trees could wander around like stray animals, and plant themselves whereever they pleased?"
I own a number of books with writing exercises that give me ideas. If you want to join my group Writing Tips, I will start publishing some exercises that might give you ideas - if people let me know you are interested.
Sandy, I find it ironic that you spent last evening making several silly comments on an "article" that was nothing more than a cut and paste copy of a silly private message that some of the members here had received. Funny how you don't see in yourself the very things that you criticize others for Sandy. This is hypocrisy at its finest!
By the way, why aren't you critizing your new friend Scott Baker? Why don't you ask him what a "422,000 novel" is? Is it because he declares himself to be a writer like you do?
Well William. I second what John said. "On writing" by Stephen King is a great book for the aspiring writer, plus a very interesting read. There are tons of other such books out there to help you with your writing. Shouldn't be hard to find them. And like John said; read read read. Then read some more.
Have fun with it!
And I agree, John. You may speak for me any time, since you have taken the time to know me well, I know you to always be honest, and you respect my opinions enough to recognize them even when you don't agree with them.. and then there's this little matter to consider:
William, Clay gave the best advice and the same advice I'd give . . . to be a better writer, be a better reader. If you stretch your mind with literature, your writing skills will inevitably improve. I keep a running vocabulary list on the back cover of books I read, and look up the words I don't know. To expand your vocabulary double-quick, read Huxley, TC Boyle, Thomas Berger, John Barth, or anything written before 1910.
"A group of us have campaigned strongly to return this site to what we believed it should be and are met with constant insults and criticism from new people who have little interest in reading and learning so they "publish" daily diaries, one-line, mindless "games", links to grocery coupons, and insults to anyone who takes pride in their work or this site."
Sandy, my point is that you are constantly spouting off about the wasted space on Gather, all the fluff and stuff articles that annoy you so. You criticize others but you don't see yourself committing the same crimes. What about your article about your "cyber stalker", you know, the one where you posted a bunch of quotes and links and a copy of his icon photo? Do you think your "Free Audrey's Boobs" was some kind of literary masterpiece? You don't see that as a ridiculous waste of space? No of course you don't. The rules for you differ from the rules you try to lay down for everyone else here.
You have a serious problem with "new people" that you really need to get over. You do not own this site just because you've been here longer! I don't see anything anywhere that says senority gives you any special powers over the rest of us.
Sandy isn't trying to exercise special powers over anyone and she is always very gracious to new people who come to the site as long as they show a modicum of intelligence and a desire to gather as the site was intended.
Gather is unique, very different from myspace and any other community site out there. Those of us who found Gather early on were so pleased with the format. It is hard to just sit back and let so much crap seep in.
You're stance on this is very polarized. Nothing is absolute. Noone is against having fun. I hope everyone has as much fun as they possibly can on this site. On the other hand, why wouldn't a site for writers want to encourage (dare I say it) writing?
I usually stay out of these petty arguments, but I really hate how everyone seems to want to gang up on Sandy. There are a ton of people who stand behind her. She is not alone.
You have been whining about the content here since I joined back on Feb 8th, and it goes back in time from there. You yourself have been here since Dec 19th , a total of less than two months longer than me, and yet continue to give a false impression it has been a "real" writers' site longer than it has in reality, if ever.
You harp on useless insulting articles yet partake in them yourself. You decry the multiple commenting to drive up points as if they were coming from your own pocket, but do the same as well. Shameless self promotion was disgusting to you, and yet every chance you get you put links to your own articles and pimp yourself as much as anyone.
You demean articles (i.e., I Quit) on leaving Gather as a means of gaining support, back slapping, and a means of seeking self satisfaction and even that perhaps Munchausen's symptoms are at play. You cry about freedom of speech, but only if it agrees with YOUR speech, YOUR truth alone. You praise your own honesty to the point of vanity but lie to yourself constantly through hypocrisy in actions. You purposely spit ire at articles you could just as easily avoid, but claim they are in the way, and ruining Gather. You know full well how to get at what you want, because in an instant you prove it if needed in making a point.
You've complained that people dont read you work, or rate you properly, and then blame the less talented as the reason, never looking at yourself as a possible cause. You blame Gather for conspiracies, the government, other members, as the root of all that is wrong here. Yet you are the most negative person I know here Sandy. Others have come and gone that do worse for a short time, but you continue, unyielding in many a sly way. You drop names, leave little innuendos here and there, then show your teeth as it pleases, dropping connections and groups as so much extra coinage in a purse...
You constantly remind people how hard you work, the hours applied, and insist others do the same or they aren't worthy. Thinking that in some way if everybody did that, your work will be more appreciated. You have much talent Sandy, but it is YOU that are the problem, YOU are why they aren't read more except by your loyal friends, not the writing itself. I for one mostly tolerate you only because of those skills and can't speak for all, but I bet many like me don't respect you much as a person. It doesn't take long for members seeking community to figure you out, and eventually try to avoid you for the most part, leaving you to your minority following in extreme thought.
So Gather is not a "pure" writer's site as to "your" liking, and we who have been here a while already know, and agree to a point at times. However, after all these months, do you really believe you are going to change it to what you think it should be by your actions as they are? Don't you think Gather would have stepped up by now to help change it "supposedly" back for good authors only by now? Now they have polls, and a group to spark conversation from them. Is that up to par with you, since it is not much different than other member's attempts at doing the same? Although there will always be improvement needed, I don't think Gather shares your vision in reality, but seeks global diversity in content. It is not the market they are obviously pursuing alone, and demeaning those that join by that marketing improves nothing. Gather continues to to promote at FOX, CNN, Starbucks, Bzzz(?) etc., and asks you to invite co-workers, friends, and family, knowing full well they all can't be as good as you. If you must lash out, do it to Gather, because if anything it is at the root of your disappointment, not members.
You carry a chip on your shoulder so huge the weight must be killing you. Perhaps it's time to lose it, or walk the talk of your article on quitting, if nothing else than for your own peace of mind. If you do the Community will miss your writing, but not your attitude, it's just sad that you don't concentrate on that to make it stronger in content, so that those that don't have your passion for writing, can exercise theirs in reading, and sharing their own diverse passions.
I'm going to feel rotten about this for days, and hate feeling I have to do it, but picking on William was just too much, as well as insinuating he can't be a good writer some day and still be well liked by those that enjoy his humanity. It's simply not true.
My apologies to all for lowering myself to make this kind of comment.
I hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.
Not long afterward, you shared a personal story about your pet. You wrote from the heart that time, and the response was warm and welcoming. At that moment, you found your literary 'voice.'
So now you've hit a plateau: you moved beyond the borrowed stuff, you've written original content.... and now you're worried you haven't -- what? Written the Iliad? Don't be unreasonably hard on yourself; most of us will never achieve more than 'adequate' status in the Grand Scheme of Things. C'est la vie. You have made real progress, and rather than defend your right to write badly -- you have chosen to improve yourself as a writer. Bravo! Keep working toward your goal, but take it one step at a time.
Define, for yourself, what the next step is.
If you aspire to better writing, take Clay's advice and *read more* -- read Clay's articles, Sandy's articles, and Birdie's articles if you wish to write good fiction. They create masterpieces. If you wish to write nonfiction, start by reading some texts on your subject and getting some firsthand experience where possible. There will come a time when the words leap to mind -- when you are well-versed in your subject and have your own thoughts or observations to share. It's up to you to push yourself along.
If I were to recommend a book for inspiration, it would be Ray Bradbury's Zen in the Art of Writing. Lnk to Ray Bradbury's book
It was Bradbury, more than any other writer, who opened up all the possibilities of the universe for me, through his stories.
I did not mean to ramble on so. It is good to hear from You. Thanks.
The best thing about what you wrote here is simply that you wrote it. Writers write.
Just know that I'm not directing this at YOU, but "you" in general. You just happened to be the last one to comment on this type of thing.
