Interest in MLIS program

I'm highly interested in becomign a librarian. Thankfully there are many presitgious distance learnign programs out there. I'm horrible at standardized testing, and I hate when schools stress the GRE exam. As if math had anything to do with a librarianship! What online programs are the best? Anyone else here on Gather a librarian or contemplating becoming one? Please share your experiences. This is truly my dream job!

I don't. Most of the people I know who pursued this work for me at Borders!

That's Philadelphia, though, and from what I understand a much tougher market than elsewhere, due to funding cuts, etc.

I don't know for sure I think you could ask a librarian. I was coming back from the library the other day thinking that would be a really cool job. As a matter of fact this town is so small that I can remember the librarian that retired about 10 years back and every now and then they have a book sell at the library and I had bought without knowing it some of her books had her little notes in the margines. It was so neat to have these things as she was the only librarian here for at least 30 years. So its like having a piece of the towns history. Well anyway I hope you find what you are looking for.

Luke, Borders seems like a great place to work for bookworms. I'm actually trying to get a job there. After a very lengthy and tedious online application, I hope I get the job at my local borders

Tammy's right - your local library is a great place to start. They often hire part time staff (who don't have degrees) so you could get a taste of library work right from the start! Think of the advantage you'll have over other students and you'll know right away whether this is the career for you.

My mom (a certified NYS children's librarian) suggests Syracuse University (she graduated from there) and Mansfield College (in PA) as good distance learning schools.

I don't have a library degree, but I do work part time for the public library system here. I LOVE it. It is one of the best jobs I've ever had. It took me about 6 months to get hired, so don't give up hope if you don't get the job right away.

Sigriet - stay patient with Borders. April through July is tough for publishing - usually around August turnover and upcoming holidays start to produce some openings. I can't speak for the store near you, but most won't be hiring for a little bit. With that being said, it's great exposure to the publishing industry and an overall fantastic experience. I wish you the best of luck!

aww, that's ok. Yup, I've applied to two separate locations. I have a job in the meanwhile, but if Borders comes up it would be nice to consider. It's definitely a nice place to grow.
