I tend to get a lot of my story and poem ideas from dreams. I keep a notebook by my bed and when I wake up I often record things in it.
When I read it later, I discover stories and poems.
To give you some idea of how my mind works, here's what I wrote today. It may or may not turn into a story. I have a lot of ideas like this, some of which never make it very far. I tend to dream in stories and I remember a lot of specific phrases and concepts, occasionally songs and poems - which I write down as quickly as I can in note format like this. Oddly enough, I'm absolutely awful at summarizing or outlining stories while I'm awake.
Greyhound
"This is my destination" - Her
"No, no it isn't." - Him
A down and out rockstar w/a drug problem is traveling cross country to meet his band.
On the bus, he meets a girl who has no idea who he is.
Over the trip, the two bond. Unfotunately, he messes things up when a groupie comes on the bus and offers to share her drugs.
The girl gets off the bus and he tries to forget her. He reunites with his band and makes it pretty big.
The girl goes back to her life, waitressing and living pretty ordinary.
The musician hits rock bottom and gets kicked out of his band.
He goes to rehab, and writes a song about the girl on the Greyhound. She hears the song and goes to his show and tries to see him. Too much security, etc. and she misses him.
Outside the club she spots the big tour bus pulling up.
He is rushing out to it, sees her and invites her to come along.
THE END
Song-
On a Greyhound bus
in the middle of the night
She took my hand
She changed my life
She reached her stop
I rode away
I think about her
Every day.
Greyhound girl
You are my world (etc)

So, sounds like a good story - and a really good song...
It's always good, I think, to share ideas that work for us. They may be of help to others that haven't tried that particular technique.
Or a good poem.
Dreams are okay, but remember:
They're the scraps
of reason
floating
in the folds
of uncaring nerve cells.
