Gather Points???

Back story:  A delightful Gather friend of mine left a lot of comments all at one time at many of my articles and pictures (mostly pictures).  I thanked her (wowed by the attention) and she brought up the POINT thing.  I emailed her this:   

"Maybe I don't know how to do Gather (LOL since I DO it) but I have no idea how the point thing works.  How were you reminded that extra points were to be given (and to me or you?)?  Is there a place to go at Gather where they tell you things like that?  It took me a while to even notice they gave points.  I just wanted to make some posts here at this nice place about my novel (and next year, novels).

I think I'm also going to make this an article, so this email can also get me those points?  I'll keep you out of it, of course.  I'll brag about you being my best Gather friend when it comes time to re-post your wonderful review of my novel (so then I get points for your review?  Hmmmm.)"

Ha-ha - do I only get points for this if you comment?

BTW, from now until the end of the month Gather is even giving away triple points!!! I was wondering why I hadn't seen you online much lately! Welcome back!

I have two names. I have for quite some time. Only one got the email offering extra points. The one who has only posted two articles.

There were some articles posted early Friday am, announcing the changes. I don't know how to do links but will try to send you the e-mail I received from one of my connections.

You only picked up a small amount of points for posting this "article". However, with points being tripled through the end of the month, you get three times those small amount of points. Where the real action comes in is the points you get for others rating and commenting on what you published...times three! Unfortunately, it seems as if many are caught up in greed and trying to make their totals go higher by posting mega-articles sitting back waiting for others to come to them and hand them the points. Lots are not rating and commenting on other's posts during the triple point period. Part of the success on Gather is to write - read- rate - comment; not just sit back and let the others do all the work for you.

I must confess I don't know how the point system works. I first signed up as a way to get paid for posting, then saw the minimum number of points PER MONTH required and decided I can't reach that goal. Instead I've stuck around to chat with people, read the articles (and yes I look at the pictures) and maybe, some day, when I have time and my muse allows it, I may even post some more of my essays.

I didn't know there were minimum points per month required!! I just like reading articles and making comments. I don't worry too much about points.

And there isn't a required minimum to survive, although if you want to be able to convert your earnings into cash instead of receiving a select number of sponsoring agencies' gift cards, you do have to earn over $50 worth of points (estimated at 3,000 points) within a period of one month, and then fill out a W-9 form for tax purposes.)

Incidentally, although I can't prove this, I think the longer the comment, the more credit you get from it. ::grins:: Therefore, the large number of relatively short comments a game generates earn less points than a small number of well-thought-out comments on a discussion topic.

I don't know if anyone really understands the point system. The points are a nice bonus but I would post without them.

As far as I know our Gather.com e-mails aren't awarded points though, so you'd have to post your response on your friends blog to have it tallied Peter. Or, as you figured out, post it here..... ; )

You gave me points and I'm giving you some too. I think that is the way it's supposed to work here on Gather - as long as we both like each other's work. If I don't like something I don't comment. If I don't like something and the poster is trying to be creative I comment (giving encouragement).

I find it interesting when people don't write captions ( for their photos), it's a good indication thay don't have pride in what they post and usually it's something borrowed off the internet and not their own property. Of course, not always so I often open the captionless photos just to make sure...

Yes, I'm one of those who doesn't enjoy stuff off the internet. I want to see personal creativity.

I'm beginning to say to myself - No Caption - No Comment.

I love your work Peter, so enjoy this point.

Didn't know the receiver of the comments received the points--I thought it ws the commentor==so here are points to you. If you get a minute, or a couple of seconds, you can reciprocate at my site. If we all helped each other out, we'd all benefit.

I'm doing a search on how to get Gather points. I'm wanting to develop a strategy that will maximize the points. So far, I've come across Austin's advice regarding longer comments as opposed to shorter to get the best result. I'm still new at this, but it seems there should be other things I can do, such as invite more subscribers. That's one of the subjects I'm trying to search out. In any case, here is a longer comment that will hopefully benefit you. Live and learn.
