How helpful do you think it would be if Gather added a spell check to their publish article toolbar?

It would help. You can download free spell checkers. Run a search on the internet. Cnet downloads probably has one.

I think it would be helpful but then there would be tons of misspelled comments too. When I remember, I use the Google Toolbar Spellchecker which works on all forms. Plus, it has a bookmarking feature and it stores the bookmarks on the Internet so you can use them at any computer. That is useful for me since I go back and forth from my desktop to my laptop and I always have my bookmarks available.

I would love it. I have started doing my articles on Word first so I can have a spell check then moving them over to gather when I have them correct. It would be nice to have it all here.

That's a silly question. Of course it would be helpful. But so many people have word or some other word processing program on their machine and they could write their comments or articles there and spellcheck before copying it over to Gather, and they don't. So, I'm not really sure if people would care enough to use it. And, like you point out, Carol, many of these posts aren't meant to be grammatically correct or correctly spelled, we just want to share our thoughts. Still, having said all that, hopefully, Gather would listen to your suggestion.

Yes, it would help.....or people could just use another program to check their spelling.

I do QA for an internet software company. We just added a spell check....and it's really not much good. We've had to add many words to our dictionary. Simple, everyday words had to be added.....and the suggestions they give for misspelled words!!! It's hard to figure out how they come up with the suggestions. So.....if they're not going to get a good spell checker, it's not worth it.

I try to read over my articles and comments before I publish and still miss a typo or two in my haste to get an article out. I edit articles but that is not available on comments so it would be helpful if we had it on both.

It wouldn't help me. I use Firefox as a browser and it has a spellchecker that automatically checks everything I write now.

Would help spell check was used before artical was pasted to be published. But a spell check would also be helpful on garther.

It would be a nice feature, but I feel there are more pressing issues with the publishing tools on this site. Like many others have said, I work up most of my articles on my computer and can more effeciently run spell check in Word.

At this time it is more important to me that the gather publishing tool work consistantly and that it retain formating, not loose text or images in the uploading process so publishing an article is not such a chore!

Well Bill we start small and cheap and then once we figure out how to get things done here at Gather we can take on some of the bigger issues which agree with you are needed. This is an exercise in getting something done that is useful to us and wont cost Gather an arm and a leg. Its confidence builder too

I do my actually typing up of my articles on microsoft word. I then copy and paste over to both my blog and Gather. My spellchecking is done as I type up the article. It's pretty much instant. My real problem is my grammar.

There is a program that I use all the time that is called SmartType Assistant. It corrects any thing you type in any program you type in. I have used it for a long time. check it out here.

You could submit this suggestion to Tom Gerace's group also.

A spell checker should be loadable whenever required, not as a default utility. A large spell checker dictionary consumes heavy overhead memory.
