HOLY CHIT.....PLANE HAS CRASHED INTO NEW YORK BUILDING

A small plane has just crashed into a building here in New York!  No news on it other than the crash itself.....Crashed into building on E 71st Street on the Upper East Side.

Update on this report.....they are not sure if it was a small plane or chopper...location is 72nd Street.

FAA has confirmed it was a small plane...watching the video, fire is burning way up in the building, and police on scene have stated it is a multi-engine plane that hit the building about ten stories up. Plane may actually be inside the building and burning.

Building hit is a 20 story apartment building. NORAD was not tracking the aircraft, so early reports are that this was probably not a high jacked aircraft. Two floors of the building are engulfed in flames. Exact location is 72 and York on the Upper East Side of New York City.

There is also a fuel spill on the ground as well as the fire ten floors up.

It is believed this building is the Belair, a luxury Condo Building, and if that is the building, it is a 50 story building, not a 20 story building...this building is only about 30 blocks from the United Nations.

Now, at 3;24 on NBC they are thinking the building might fall. Still no news on whether it is a plane or a chopper, but they are also saying to keep in mind that on 9-11 at first people thought it was a small plane.

CNN just said that it was a plane and not a chopper.

No need to worry about the building falling down. Everything is in tact - as much as things can be in the situation.

They said that the plane was flying within the parameters, whatever that means.

It's a huge pre war concrete/brick structure, so doubt collapse is a reality, as the walls of those buildings are usually 3-4 feet thick.

Actually many folks thought it was one of the medical helicopters trying to land at the hospital. but the FAA has confirmed that it was a commuter plane (according to 1010 WINS).

They are also saying no reason to be concerned that this may be a terrorist act at all, no idea whether people have evacuated, but there is debris on the sidewalk, people are trapped, at least one confirmed dead, NTSB will be at the scene soon, the rescue team has had to walk uip the stairs to the upper floors.

These NYC apartment buildings are built, according to NBC reporters, to withstand fires such as these and they are saying it is possible that a fire as small as this would not necessarily risk the lives of those in other apartments nearby.

But it is VERY early to make those predictions.

FAA has said it is an airplane Kathryn, not a chopper. This is a four alarm fire, and I just sawa street picture, and I would hazzard a guess that the plane IS IN THE BUILDING.

Doris Light a witness for NBC said she saw a chopper, Tamara. The NBC reporters are saying that a number of people are saying they saw different things.

The Bel Air Tower definitely won't go down and none of the surrounding buildings will catch fire. It would have taken a much larger plane for that to happen.

Based on the size of the aircraft, fuel spill could not be more than 100 gallons of fuel.

Porgie, the fire IS in the building. The NYC officials have not confirmed whether it is a plane or a chopper. They are saying small plane, but they mean small aircraft. I'm watching NBC TV.

NBC is saying that the FAA is saying it appears to be a fixed-wing plane, but people are not sure whether that is a plane or a chopper because it is in the building.

Kathryn....they are saying SMALL FIXED WING flying under visual flight rules, thus not needing to be in contact with the FAA. Good news so far, is they are saying it is and accident, not a terrorist attack.

A chopper, accident makes more sense, but if it is a fixed wing as is being reported on CBS, ABC and CNN, it makes the accident scenerio a bit odd.

2 confirmed dead, with more deaths likely. The aircraft (they are now saying plane not chopper) was flying at 800 feet, made a sudden turn and then crashed. I'm going offline now.

Watching the fire....it was limited to four windows...two on each floor, but if you look at the filming, it has now spread to a third window section on the lower of the two floors, so the fire is spreading.

Porgie there are a lot of commuter planes that fly through Manhattan daily. So it is possible. But usually here hear about crashes like that in NJ (just over the GW Bridge) as they are coming out of Teterboro Airport.

Meanwhile, for those of us who have been watching, the fire does seem to have spread.....now there seems to be smoke, and some flame four windows wide instead of the original two. Two confirmed deaths so far, though they are saying the death count could go higher.

10/11/06 is 09/11/01 upside down...I do not believe this is an accident, I don't care what they are saying to "reassure" you. NORAD isn't scrambling fighter jets over a definite "accident."

Alternatively, they could use this to suggest that their work is not done, that we need to continue the war on terror, and we should not be electing those "soft" Democrats. Sure would take some attention away from the Foley scandal.

NBC News New York is reporting that the plane was possibly owned or about to eb owned by Yankees pitcher Cory Lidle, who is a fairly new pilot (only has had a license for 7 months). 4 People died, 2 on the plane and 2 in the building. They are not sure yet who was in the plane and what exactly the cause is. I at first thought it was terrorism but I'm going against my original thought and now think it's an accident.

So they are saying on the news that it was perfectly ok that there was no flight plan filed because the plane was flying under 1100 feet. Is this ok in a post-9/11 world? I don't understand how that's perfectly legal.

the FAA doesn't require a flight plan when a plane is flying under 1100 feet, this according to NBC news here in New York (channel 4 for those of you in the area)

Moments ago, Michael Bloomberg spoke in a news conference. One of the passengers was a flight instructor, another was a student pilot. He is saying he doesn't actually know WHO was piloting the plane registered to Lidle. Bloomberg refused to confirm that Lidle was on board, in fact, though it has been reported, elsewhere.

Yes, Arielle - it is a recurring problem. I try to delete most of the double posts but don't always get to all of them...I am on dial up and also have a few tabs open on Firefox. Besides, the traffic is pretty heavy on Gather this time of day...Often, it reposts without any additional clicking from me. But now I have to leave to go to the health club so I won't be checking this one for several hours.
