My honest suggestion for you in your situation would be to do "Dips" to build up your triceps, chest and shoulder strength.
It's a great compound exercise that targets all of the areas that you need to condition in order to be able to lift yourself up after the surgery (being on crutches as an example)
It does require use of a Dip Station in order to do the exercise safely.
The next best exercise would be to do push-ups which require no equipment at all but may be hard on your knees at this point.
If you have access to dumbells, you could also do standing military presses.. they may help out a bit.
If you would like more info on performing these exercises, drop me another line :)
I am not either but I checked out your article.
Welcome to Gather.
Yes I'd have to agree.. If you have Fibromyalgia and have pains already then lifting weights might be difficult to do.
Having Lupus on top of that would make matters worse because you may actually have trouble building muscle and keeping it on.
You seem to have your hands full and fitness should be the last thing on your mind.
Hopefully your flare-ups can be kept to a minimum.
I wish you the best :)
I sent you a message.
Oh and since you're in NC... say Hello to Dale Jr. for me :)
I'm glad my info could be of help to you :)
The treadmill is OK in the beginning I suppose but an elliptical machine or stair-climber would give a much better workout for burning calories :)
Remember the more you do the more you burn. A quality workout is always better than a quantity workout; even with aerobics.
Keep progressing and you'll get there eventually.
I always try to post quality information or products... the kind of info or items that everyday people can use and be successful with.
I never endorse or promote things that don't work in real life.
Thanks again for stopping by :)
I was considering joining "Golds Gym" to tone up my legs and arms and also to work on my stomach. I would like to know whether it is best to lose a few lbs first and then work out with weights or whether fat will turn to muscle? I really have excellent body tone now, little body fat but needed to know the truth once and for all about this. I've been told contradicting things so I haven't joined the gym as of yet.
Your response or opinion on this is appreciated.
Being toned means that one can see muscle definition.
In order to see that we have to either burn off the body-fat that is covering up the muscle that you already have or building muscle mass that doesn't exist at the present time (in the case of someone that is considered to be "skin & bones").
I'm not exactly sure where you stand with that, at this time without knowing or seeing your body type and condition.
Please understand that body-fat does NOT turn to muscle, NOR does muscle ever turn to fat.
Body fat can be mobilized then converted to a form of energy by conditioning the body in a certain way (ultra-high intensity aerobics are the best way). One must also try to maintain muscle mass while in this training mode. Added protein is a must in this situation (primarily in the form of Glutamine to preserve muscle).
Now let's talk about muscle growth... there's is only one way to truly build muscle and strength. One must perform resistance training techniques that utilize the most weight possible in order to stimulate the greatest amount of potential muscle mass (after that, proper nutrition & rest usually get the final results).
Remember this: "muscle mass is not built at the gym, it's built afterwards"
Of course we have to use proper exercise form for the most part in order to stay uninjured.
So when building muscle it's never about how many repetitions one can do. It's about how much weight one lifts during their exercises because the amount of resistance is what stimulates the need for more muscle mass. Continual progression is also the key to success in this area.
One more thing.. there is no such thing as spot fat reduction. If you do cardio to burn calories and body-fat, the body-fat loss gets spread throughout the body, not just in the area of the exercises being performed.
Doing crunches for abs does 2 major things: burns calories and stimulates the building of more abdominal muscle and strength. It does not rid of body-fat in that area. Most people have decent ab muscles that they just can't see do to body-fat covering them. Doing crunches will just make that area stick out even farther.
As far as losing body-fat first then training with weights is concerned... as long as someone can go through the motions of lifting weights, I see no reason to wait. They can actually do both types of training with knowing their limits (burning yourself out will get you nowhere fast).
Resistance training actually burns calories (not so much body-fat though) and raises ones heart rate quite well. Your heart rate can stay elevated for hours after training and this is a good thing.
It causes a temporary rise in a persons metabolic rate which equals more burning of calories way after the training session has ended. The body is also in a more "catabolic" state at that time as well but that's a whole other story :)
Let me know if this info was of help to you and if you have any other concerns drop me another line.
A copy of this has been emailed to you as well.
I agree for sure.
I do offer a great bodybuilding package at the bottom of all my fitness pages (at the top of my main page too) but it's not like I'm begging anyone to make a purchase of it as you know.
I make mention of it just to let people know that it exists in case they happen to be looking for a way to jump start their potential muscle-building success (bodybuilding is a way of life).
Besides.. my information is well laid out and I give out lots of good info in my articles.
And as you and many others have found out... I'm more than generous with my knowledge and background. It's extremely time consuming to me but there is a bit of satisfaction in helping others plus it puts me in a mode where I'm doing the next right thing.
Talk to ya soon :)
If you're looking for something more convenient you may want to think about buying an elliptical machine or stationary bike for home use.
Just a thought :)
