How many times have you heard people say "If they are tired of being fat why don't they do something about it"?
There are those people that are overweight just because they eat too much and don't excersise. But the majority of the overweight people have other problems that either cause their weight gain or prevent them from doing anything about it. There are many illnesses and disorders that prevent weight loss.
The majority of people who have weight problems have battled this since early childhood or teen years. Then as they reach adulthood it becomes more and more difficult to lose the weight because the metabolism slows down.
Let me give you some true cases about people I have known in my life.
There is a lady that as a child was overweight. The family had little money for medical bills so she was just termed lazy and fat. Only as the weight continue until she was over 500 pounds did the doctors decide there may be other issues. This woman has many, many illnesses all realating to her weight. Some of these illnesses cause the weight gain and some are from the weight gain. She is working now to get the gastric bypass surgery. Even as dangerous as these are, she is willing to risk it just to lose some of the weight. She can not get out and exercise because of the medical problems.
Another lady I know is overweight but can not exercise because she has very low oxygen copacity, diabetes, and many other illnesses. How then is she supposed to lose weight. She also is bi-polar, with several other mental issues also. This combination makes it impossible to lose the weight.
Another lady has had many surgeries in her abdominal region that has caused loss of muscle usage. One of the surgeries was a hysterectomy, which is known for causing weight gain. She also has many mental disorders, along with physical disorders that prevent her from exercising. She has problems with her back due to her weight, such things as ruptured disc, poor muscle strength, and severe muscle spasms.
These women can not exercise without hurting themselves very bad. Of course in a perfect world they could all have a surgery to make the weight go away, but due to the existing illnesses it is very unlikely that they would be able to keep the weight off. Most of these illnesses do not heal themselves.
I ask you that next time you see an overweight person and think to make snide remarks, please remember these ladies I have told you about. So many can not help the problem. Sure they could starve themselves but that still would not solve the problem. So I ask that instead of making crude jokes please remember that this person could have many disabilities that prevent the exercise needed to lose the weight.

These are just people, and I don't think anything of it when I see them. I wish others thought like you do.
"I have never felt invisible in my entire life, now no one sees me, they just see my body and disregard me"
Cancer treatments, mainly steroids took her from her lifelong waif figure to nearly 200lbs. I've known her all my life, and would not have recognized her if I didn't know already.
That made her "invisible". How sad

AND - the double standard is seen here, too. If you know someone who can eat all the time and never gain weight, then everyone says, "Must be their metabolism". But if you know someone who eats salads twice a day and lives on 600 calories & still remains overweight, then the 'wise' people say, "Hmph! Lazy glutton!" Agh!!
God help these poor ignorant fools to open their hearts and learn that they are speaking about people who are precious in their own right - creations of the same One who created the self-styled 'perfect' ones. How dare any of us mock another?
Anyone remember the old Ray Stevens song - "Everything is Beautiful, In Its Own Way"?
Thank you again, Julie, and thanks to ALL of you who have commented here.
While I don't LIKE being over weight, I am learning to live with it a little more.
There are many things people don't know (or need to) about others. Those that are quick to judge are really quite shallow and show no sort of initiative in learning about new people. The whole world should be "lucky" to be as perfect as they are huh?
Truth be known...they are afflicted by FAR more than any person of size...or handicap...or color...or creed...other than their own could ever be..
Thanks also for writing this article so that I could see another diabetic respond and mention a drug that I have been wondering about. This could majorly change my life and my outlook on my diabetes. All of it is thanks to you!
I was taken by the remark that I still think about how bad her self-esteem must be if she referred to her self in that manner?
Namaste
As I write, I am recovering from gastric lap band surgery--not as invasive as the gastric bypass, but also leaves me with a stomach that will only hold 2-4 ounces. It will become fully effective in a few weeks when the swelling goes down and the doctor can inject the saline into the band. It's not always as successful as a gastric bypass, because with a gastric bypass, you system won't tolerate sugary foods, but with the lap band, you can theoretically eat anything you want, just in smaller amounts. But with all the time and money I have spent on this (not to mention the pain!), I am going to work very hard at this and stick to the proteins that are required for this new lifestyle. THe good news is, I had lost 10 lbs before I even started, so that gives me hope that I can conquer the weight, and maybe even my food addiction!
Yes, there can be health problems that people are inflicted with as a result of being overweight. But, there are just as many thin people who are diabetic, arthritic, etc. Anyone can be acquire these medical problems. They are not primarily the problem of the overweight.
Thanks for this wonderful article.
