It is small if it is in pennies, but what if it is young American lives lost needlessly?
As of yesterday at least 4,329 members of the military have died in Iraq. At least 680 have died in Afghanistan. 5009! When I look at that number, I mourn for thousands of families who have lost a young loved one: wives, husbands, children, parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, cousins, aunts, uncles, friends. That figure is incalculable.
What is this madness? What have we done?

58,193 U.S. soldiers killed in Viet Nam. Does this mean that we're improving? NOT!
Gates said in a speech last week that from January through June this year there were 87 deaths reported in the military. But, that there were also 87 suicides of military personnel that went unreported.
How many soldiers have taken their own lives because of this folly?
Sheryl mentioned the suicide rates - those numbers will continue to rise long after the end of this mistake.
The world has gone mad.
