At church our minister has been preaching a sermon series he calls "The People's Choice". He had the congregation come up with topics they really wanted to hear a sermon about. The final few topics included leadership, the economy, politics and religion, and the election.
When I first heard some of the topics, I was a bit skeptical because I really don't believe in mixing religion and politics at all...and I was afraid he was going to try and persuade us on where we should place our vote. However, I was pleasantly surprised to find that he did not venture at all into that area.
Today, he talked about the election...and how no matter who is voted into office, we need to remember that God is in control. Whoever wins will be winning because God allows him to win. He pointed out that no matter what we may think of either candidate, neither one is perfect...and neither one a tyrant. He also pointed out that even with our nation in a somewhat scary state right now, 95% of the rest of the world would give anything to be in our shoes.
He then made a very true statement. He said that if we spent as much time praying for our leaders as we do complaining about them, our nation might be in a better state.
Definitely something to think about.

Good post and worth thinking about.
Marilyn
You believe what you say and thats all that matters.
I have respect for you because of your strong beliefs I just dont share them.
But prayer by people that truly believe in god never hurts.
Andy yes, we must pray for whomever wins. There is much to be done and whomever wins will not have an easy job.
I must say that I have a difficult time believing that we have been afflicted with eight years of Bush/Cheney because God was on their side. I would find it somewhat easier to believe that we were being punished for some of our past collective sins.
I am hopeful that, finally, we have been punished enough, and that, if God feels disposed toward granting us a modicum of relief, he will allow a man who has the head, heart and personal integrity of a genuine humanitarian to prevail and take charge of things. I'll refrain from making any more of a partisan comment than that.
By abdicating our responsibility to be "an informed electorate" we invite the liars, the prevaricators, the slanderers, the ignorant and the arrogant to take the levers of power. And we have no excuse. We live in a information society, everything is at our finger tips. In an hour or two per week reading a variety of material on public policy matters the average person could inform themselves enough to vote responsibly.
Instead most vote emotionally, or vote the way someone told them to, or vote along party lines as though it was about being part of an exclusive club, or vote for or against something they know in their heart they really don't understand. Or they don't vote at all.
Sometimes I despair that we humans really are not capable of making democracy really work.
I suspect a lot of people hear this and interpret it to believe god has a preference.
I imagine god sitting there scratching her head and saying, "What's gotten into these people, I know i made them smarter than that!"
Thank you - it is true that we all need to stop and pray and look at what we ahev rather then what we don't.

I could not have stated that better myself - thank you!!!
If it were actually true that Obama was a Muslim and took his oath on the Koran, it would say that the majority of the people of our country actually believe in the constitution and the first amendment and that we practice what we preach.
I would add that it would mean that the promises of the Declaration of Independence were no longer myths but had in fact proven to be true.
I would say that 230 years after the signing of our constitution that we had finally escaped the bonds of slavery and segregation.
I would say that we had finally learned to look past the color of a man's skin and see the content of his character.
I would say the sinners had stopped casting stones and the glass houses had no broken windows.
I would say it is morning in america and it is a beautiful day.
