Bush Accepts Bolton's Resignation

The Associated Press reports President Bush Accepts Resignation of United Nations Ambassador John Bolton.

Bolton will step down when his temporary appointment expires.

Bolton's nomination has languished in the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for more than a year, opposed by Democrats and blocked by soon to be former Rhode Island RINO Senator Lincoln Chafee.

Let me get this straight: We get to keep Chavez and Pelosi, and we lose Rumsfeld and Bolton.

Vickey, The AP article stated:

The White House resubmitted Bolton's nomination last month. But with Democrats capturing control of the next Congress, his chances of winning confirmation appeared slight. The incoming chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Democratic Sen. Joe Biden of Delaware, said he saw "no point in considering Mr. Bolton's nomination again."

While Bush could not give Bolton another recess appointment, the White House was believed to be exploring other ways of keeping him in the job, perhaps by giving him a title other than ambassador. But Bolton informed the White House he intended to leave when his current appointment expires, White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said.

I think it is too bad that the politicians are viewing him in the same light they used when he was originally proposed. I think he has had to deal with a lot of heavy stuff in the past 18 months and he has done an excellent job in a very tough situation. Who do the dems want? Madeline Albright?

What's more important is the next person the President will nominate. Will it be a spit in your eye nominee like Bolton was or will it be someone that the Pres and Congress both can live with. We will see if this Pres really does want to work with the new Congress.

Patrick, I don't think Bush has a choice but to work with the Democratic leadership. What's his alternative, fight them every step of the way and risk bringing reprisals in the form of investigations into the administration's run up to the war, domestic surveillance, etc.?

Any Republican eyeing '08 is not going to want to align himself/herself with that strategy. Everyone is going to want to point to bi-partisanship and how they were able to work to get things done.

I'm not sure the President needs to go for people the dems like. If he appoints solid conservatives with no ugly surprises in their background, it will be the dems that make themselves look like fools for not confirming them. Like it or not, he is the President and the choices are his to make.

If the dems react to his choices with retaliatory investigations they will lose in '08 not the GOP.
