Email Notifications

When I first joined gather (has it only been a little over three weeks?) I set my preferences to be notified whenever one of my connections published an article, when anyone commented on one of my articles, and when anything was published by groups I belong to.  But as my group membership increased and my network expanded, the volume of email generated by these preferences became overwhelming.  I have since changed preferences several times trying to find a happy medium between an overabundance of email and the possibility of missing articles and comments I would have enjoyed or should have read. 

How are other gatherholics handling this issue?

Linda, what I do is set an email rule that automatically puts all Gather notifications in their own mail folder. Then I leave all the default settings (similar to what you had set at the beginning). I get lots of mail, but at least once a day, more if I'm bored, I look through them. Lately I have been doing a lot of work on the computer that gets those notifications, so I see them flash by in real time and I tend to comment immediately, especially on short articles like yours. Gather is fun, but can be a real time waster. The best way to deal with it is to only look at the notifications when you have time to do so, and not let them disrupt other tasks.

I also reset my email notifications. I only get notified if someone befriends me, invites me to a group, msgs me or comments on my article. Other than that, I search through members seperately, or go to ARTICLES at the top to search for newly published articles by My People.

Linda, I stopped receiving the email notifications long time ago. I now take time every day or every other day to read the articles for me that show up on the "My Gather" page. That way I can go through and read at my leisure and my mail box doesn't get over loaded. I don't mind when folks send me an email to have me read something because now and then I will miss something I later find was quite valuable.

I still receive email notifications and I receive a LOT...about 3,000 a day..Currently about 8,000 in my inbox. But I read them sparingly, sometimes not at all, if I don't have time...It is a good way to keep up, though. Especially with people that are new.

I'm still on original settings. I enjoy being able to read the articles from the email. So much easier than trying to get into gather and go to each group. I'm also kind of picky about what I read.

I'm going to have to do the same thing..in just a short time I can't believe how many notifications i'm getting...especially annoying are the ones telling me I commented or wrote something...duh......

Amen Barbara, Those are the most annoying. When I get a chance to read and comment, I sometimes get 8 or 10 emails in a row to notify me of my own comments.

Going nuts. I spend so much time reading and commenting on articles that I don't have time to write. I try to read all articles by those I am connected with, but it is getting impossible.

I finally shut off most of my groups because I was getting many duplicates. If most of your connections are in that group why bother. I still get over 2000 a day, and can't read them all, let alone comment. I just scan through and pick out what I have time for. I used to try and hit them all to be nice, but I just can't do it anymore.
Like William, I spend so much time reading I hardly ever write anything. I do enjoy it though.
I've been thinking of maybe shutting of most email and doing subscriptions, but who would I choose? It's tough.

The fact that the systems sends you notifications of your own posts to comments is simply ridiculous! A simple piece of code that says if name = author then don't send notice would do the job. 5 minutes of coding folks to solve a major problem!

Thanks for all the advice. I was wondering how to stop all the emails. They are not neede as I can find all the articles on my gather

I choose to receive email notifications when my connections publish, and when anyone comments on something I have published. We all have different opinions, and mine is that I should not connect to people whose work I don't want to read and if someone took the time to read my work and comment, I don't want to miss reading that comment. Therefore, I try to consider my connections carefully and keep them at a number I can manage.

I had to change my settings too. I downsized notifications, but I'll still check things out online. My inbox is too full all the time anyway!

Rich, could you please tell me how to set up a folder that it will go in to automatically??? I know how to set up a folder, just not sure how to make it go there without putting it there myself. Thanks

I changed my settings when I was getting 200 a day. I can't imagine getting 1000's. I think I would cry. Then delete everything and start over.
