It has been exactly a year since the election of the 44th US President on November 4, 2008. What did the number “4” mean for the world, Russia, the USA, and Barack Obama himself?
It can be said that Obama has chosen a role of a pop-idol in politics. It is not easy to throw stones at him. He has not made any foreign policy issues more rigorous, has not gotten into a fight with anyone, smiled a lot, and let everyone meet his wife Michele.
He even managed to please Cuba and Russia. He delegated all tasks that require unpopular measures to his assistants, Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton.
This makes the resemblance of Barack Obama and Mikhail Gorbachev almost mystical. Now, let’s consider the details.
Moscow is charmed and disarmed

But it wasn't.
If Gorbachev had been like past Soviet leaders Reagan would have never uttered the words "Mr. Gobachev tear down this wall!" because Reagan would have known it would only make him look foolish because there was no chance that Gorachev would agree that the Berlin wall was symbolic of a division in international relations that had to end if the world had any chance at acheiving peace.
It is said the history is written by the victors and I can only hope that future historians will look more kindly on Mr. Gorbechev and realize that without his hopes and vision of different Soviet Union the world would be a much different place than it is today and that if had he had suceeded it would also have a better chance for peace than it does today.
