Barack Obama and Mikhail Gorbachev: Mystical Resemblance

This could have been about the relative chaos that Gorbachev had to deal with, or the downsizing of super powers in history...

But it wasn't.

Com to think of it, the fawning over the Man-Child Obama reminds me of the old, 1980's "Gorbasms." I remember all the fawning over Gorby back then.

It wasn't fawning, it was a recognition the Gorbachev represented a feally significant departure from previous Soviet leaders. He tried to reform the Soviet system from within and to a certain extent succeeded, but at great cost to his own reputation and position because he did not want to break up the alliance of the Soviet Republics that gave Russia and the USSR greater strength and international influence, and stood in the way of power seekers both in and outside the Soviet Union.

If Gorbachev had been like past Soviet leaders Reagan would have never uttered the words "Mr. Gobachev tear down this wall!" because Reagan would have known it would only make him look foolish because there was no chance that Gorachev would agree that the Berlin wall was symbolic of a division in international relations that had to end if the world had any chance at acheiving peace.

It is said the history is written by the victors and I can only hope that future historians will look more kindly on Mr. Gorbechev and realize that without his hopes and vision of different Soviet Union the world would be a much different place than it is today and that if had he had suceeded it would also have a better chance for peace than it does today.
