Drowned College Girls – Star Gazing? I doubt it!

I read the stories and watch the news about the three Dickinson State University students who drowned by driving into a stock tank out in a pasture in North Dakota, in the dark of night. It was terrible and it was tragic. While most of the attention is focused to the loss of these three girls, the investigation on authorities goes on. No word yet as the real cause. 

However, there is a phenomenon around the country involving College and High School students that this incident maybe related to. Here in Texas the activity is called “Cow Tipping”. In the story of these three girls, it has been said they were out “looking at the stars” and they were known to do that often. It is all part of a larger problem of an alcoholism epidemic rampant among today’s youth. 

I have no idea if these three girls were drinking, but I would bet good money on it. I hope I am wrong. 

Every Friday or Saturday night, in almost every rural area that has a high school or college near by, you will find in some secluded pasture, a bunch of kids getting drunk. No days they try to cover up their drinking problems by calling it “partying”.. but problem drinking by youth is at an all time high. So are all the problems that come with it. 

Many times, the land owners are aware of it.. most of those who knowingly allow it to go on are actually parents .. But in most cases they are members of a alcohol based culture to begin with. You have heard them talk of underage drinking// “well, kids will be kids!” or “ I would rather have them drinking around here than out in public”. I have heard many of them say “ Well , as long as they are out in that pasture, they are safe.. let them have their fun”. 

You don’t hear those same people talk about the rapes, beatings, broken bones, car wrecks and other things that happen out in those fields at night when kids are drunk and isolated. 

It’s all part of this pervasive problem of denial which accompanies an alcohol intensive culture that so many young people are now and integral part of. Call it partying if you want, but its still getting drunk, it’s still using a chemical substance to avoid the normal parts of life. Its not a way to live, it’s a way to not live, one way or the other. I dread to see the alcoholic treatment rates in the next 20 years.

I hope this case gets investigated and completey brought to light. If they had been drinking, I hope it is covered up by local authorites, like what happens around here evertime one of these pasture drunks turns tragic.
