Why is it that Americans in particular, or at least some Americans, seem to place such great value on outward trappings of patriotism? It seems that throughout this Presidential campaign in particular, there have been watchers counting the number of times Candidate X appeared in public wearing or not wearing a lapel pin, etc. - and immediately denouncing them as "unpatriotic" for not doing so.
In most European countries, including the UK, many people are fiercely patriotic. But you rarely see, except in the case of extreme right-wing parties, an insistence on the use of national flags as an outward display of patriotism. You didn't see Nicolas Sarkozy wearing a tricolor lapel pin at all of his public appearances while running for President, but there were no scurrilous articles about his failure to be sufficiently French; Gordon Brown does not wrap himself in the Union flag every time he represents Great Britain, but nobody doubts that he is a loyal and patriotic Briton (however effective a Prime Minister you might think he is).
So why is it so important for American candidates to "out-flag" each other?
I was looking at the Snopes article. Is there a flag on John McCain's plane? It is hard to tell on the photo.
Having looked at the article, I also think it's worth mentioning that there is, as it shows, still an American flag logo on the plane. What was removed was the specific style of flag logo on the tail that was a trademark of the company from which the plane was leased.
I note that none of the anti-Obama commentators on this thread have responded to the (factual and verifiable) comments that at least two people have posted, pointing out that the insignia removed was one that belonged to the charter airline as a matter of trademark, and that an American flag insignia did in fact remain on the plane...
But perhaps I was too busy playing video games to notice those responses.
