Starting the day off with a good photo opportunity makes for a good day.
Once again, the humidity and light clouds offered up yet another 'good morning' shot for me and the dogs. Add to that the fact that my camera does something really neat with sun that is filtered thru trees and bushes. It creates a ray that shoots straight up from the sun...whether it is simply something in the lens, or the possibility that it is simply invisible to the human eye, is beyond my comprehension, but it is so cool....

The fun part was that later in the day, a storm passed by us and we were able to see the clouds growing like mousse in your hand. The sun blasting from the late afternoon angle was heating the clouds' steam, creating 30-40 thousand foot high clouds.
As we watched them grow and heard the thunder, the clouds eventually began to spurt 'lava flows' on the top....hail being born! The storm produced nickel-sized hail for communities south of our home and we were able to see nature's ice machine in action!
The photos which follow are in order as the clouds grew.

This was the first indication that a strong storm was brewing...clouds being pushed different directions, creating what made me think of an arm of the storm 'flexing its muscle'.

The beginning upper clouds.

The top is beginning to 'boil'

What looks like four fingers reaching over the top toward me is actually four fast-moving boil-overs of hail being produced. You could actually watch the boilover which moved way faster than if you were just watching storm clouds billow. I wish I had a video camera for that one!

Finally, the upper level winds came along and started to blow the tops off the clouds, which created an airbrush effect. It was kind of like the wind was going to blow the sand off the sidewalks.
It was an afternoon to remember. The only thing missing was the accidental capture of a lightning bolt...but that will happen one day!
Of course it will probably be a picture taken of me, standing out in the storm to get pictures, getting "taser'd" by Mother Nature as she says, "Hey dummy! Don't ya know enough to get in out of the rain?"
Zap!

...are you watching me....? ;o)
(Are your dogs afraid of thunder?)
Wonderful essay, Eric.
I simply love to go out and watch a storm brew. The clouds do such a marvelous act as it comes together. The excitement grows as the wind starts turning the leaves over and the air smells so fresh.
Carolyn constantly tells me to get in out of the lightning, but I just cannot pull myself away until that 'close one' hits.
I actually stood outside in the shed as a tornado approached our area about 13 years ago...it was awesome!
In this particular storm, we got no rain, which is why I was able to shoot it as an onlooker, but we have had some pretty good 'gully washers' lately!
I had the opportunity to watch a tornado go thru a neighboring town many years ago, far enough away to actually watch the storm go thru it's growth. It was fantastic!....and me without a camera at the time.
Three years ago I saw a storm south of us which looked like a nuclear blast had occurred! Eerie cloud formation THAT day!
Dogs? Bonnie is hesitant and hides, Bella finds them as fascinating as I.
Mike, that's high praise, thanks!
It is nice to be complemented by those who's work I admire!
That's what i call 'picturesque speech' - something you are a master of!
Java stared out the windshield, by the way...
Thanks, Kate!
When I was a kid I would go stand just inside the garage door and watch the storms come in from the river and over the golf course that was across the road from our house.
Moysant, it's a cheap digital camera we got for free from a contest on the internet, funny huh?
Kathleen, it IS fun to watch the 'brewing' of a storm...almost daring!
Thanks Jennifer!
Rose, thank you, I just feel the moment and sometimes it all comes together. MOst of it comes from always watching my environment, kinda like watching for predators while pumping gas...they'll sneak up on you if you appear focused on the gas tank instead of looking around....
It's nice to have something to share that folks enjoy.
I appreciate you stopping by!
i just posted a poem with a cloud photo - here:
HERE
Maybe I'll get some new photos...!
we have had a total of 4 days with rain since Sept 10th...woo hoo!
