amanda: Every line a 'magnet line' -- I can envision the clouds exhaling (this line really jumped out at me) but I linger at line 1: "Sigh of mesquite air". . . WOW!

What a setting you've painted! I will have this in my mind all day.

Beautiful image, Amanda. You do it all so well! I remember camping above Sante Fe in October at about 11,000 feet, and looking out over the valley at night. A gorgeous constellation of lights before me, I realize that I have to take a leak. Well, I'm out in the boonies so what the hell... as I'm in blissful release, taking it all in, I suddenly detect a rustling sound in the bushes nearby. A moment later a black bear stands up to see what that strange sound is! We look at each other momentarily, and immediately dash in our separate directions! It doesn't get more real than that... I'm not sure who was more surprised by what he encountered.

Superb short poem that got me at "sigh of mesquite air": I love such specificity of place, description, reality. The concomitant "cushions of ice" really builds up that high desert cold in one's mind: I don't need to imagine Georgia O'Keefe kicking through her collection of cattle skulls in midwinter when I have Amanda W. kicking up such hi test haikus.
