Hello Gather member(s) welcome to my little random musing. I was doing my normal household chores today and the gears in my little brain began to turn. After a few brief moments of smoke and putting out the fire, I thought this might make for a great little article that sparks some thought in other people. I love to make people think, just ask my kids who will take drastic escape measures each time the words "okay, let's think about this" exits my mouth. If you feel this article would interest you, read on and feel free to add your own thoughts on the subject. Remember there are no wrong responses here, each person is allowed to speak exactly what is on their mind. I am not looking for affirmation that I have had some sort of epiphany ,,, that would have been a total meltdown instead of just smoke and fire. This is just a thought to invoke some genuine conversation between our diverse community.
Gather is a site that deals deeply with the voice of opinion. It is a human need to be understood and heard in a world so busy that we often get lost in the crowd. Gather members are busy too - articles are spewed out faster than an automated factory producing parts. Variety is the mainstream as topics range from the mundane to the philosophical; from family matters to politics. Quenching ones thirst for new ideas; spontaneous thinking; debate and humor are met with a multitude of pieces from the technicality to the general. Every thought put down to words by our distinctive community is open to the opinions, viewpoints, ideas, outlooks, critiques, disagreements, agreements, statements and accurate statements of each individual who views the article.
Now amazingly enough my little brain went off the beaten path here and I wondered why I felt compelled to list each of these individually. My only thought is that I must have been brilliant in a previous life and some minuscule glimmer of it must have broken through. You see each and every one of these words though slightly similar hold different definitions. They are as follows:
Opinion -- "A personal belief or judgment that is not founded on proof or certainty."
Viewpoint -- "A mental position from which things are viewed."
Idea -- "A personal view."
Outlook -- "A habitual or characteristic mental attitude that determines how you will interpret and respond to situations."
Disagreement -- "A difference between conflicting facts or claims or opinions."
Agreement -- "Harmony of people's opinions or actions or characters."
Critique -- "A serious examination and judgment of something."
Statement -- "A message that is stated or declared; a communication (oral or written) setting forth particulars or facts"
Accurate Statement -- "A message that is stated or declared; a communication (oral or written) characterized by perfect conformity to fact or truth ; strictly correct"
Regardless of their similarities and differences we have a habit of grouping all these unique definitions into the classification of "An Opinion." This might be why there are so many disgruntled members out there. Perhaps they are not looking at which one is being expressed when reading an article. A writing that offers up insight, a personal experience, or some other topic that does not rely on fact would be open to almost any of the above except the two types of statement and the critique. Inevitably you will read an article of such genre and feel one eyebrow cock upwards in exasperation, as your mind screams -- are they on drugs? Where did they dig this up from? Do they really think before they write? The truth is that regardless of which direction the opinion goes in, no matter how vacuous it may appear to the reader who disagrees, it holds validity because of the definition of the word opinion.
Personally, I think that a combination of actions factor into what we call "our values, beliefs and opinions." It is not the same for every one, each person relies on various scenarios which is one of the reasons each individual position is unique. I believe some of these factors may be: things that we hear, events we experience, lessons learned from the events, our emotional reaction to life in general, these are some of the many issues that may factor into our views.
There is also the question of how we go about deciding on our opinion. Do we rely on what we hear from others such as friends, family and coworkers? Is it formed by listening to television or radio broadcasters and talk shows? Is it a personal search for information and facts that help us decide what we believe. In some of these cases one might argue that what is expressed as a person's opinion is in fact not what is considered a true "personal" opinion. Rather it is the acceptance of someone else's sentiment, in short an adopted point of view. Have you ever questioned where and how your opinions, beliefs and values have been formed?
So, what do you think?

Needless, to say they didn't come out of *thin air* something we read, something we heard,
and we claim it to not be our own, yet something we could identify with and then adopted it to be *part* of the sum of our opinion's, personally like to feel when I am giving advise or someone is asking for advise it is given to out by me -- through much research, time & effort to form such opinions that I feel they are worthy to pass on.
Please, keep thinking and asking questions...this is what makes *us* a community & makes it very interesting.
I also would like to comment o Bill P. I am in total agreement with what you had to say, an excellent comment. Especially, your last sentence said it all so nicely "do critique, but don't be cruel." Good manners goes a long way.
Bill -- very impressive insight into how our opinions change as we change. It is an amazing metamorphosis that usually happens gradually so many miss the changes in themselves. I enjoyed your comment. Thank you for dropping in and adding some valuable input.
Maureen -- thank you also for some great additions to the article. I am glad to have given you something enjoyable to read. As the questions come I will share.
Thanks for adding yours! :-)
Thanks Amber I think we all sell our selfs short i'm not sure why that is but at least I know I do it alot.
It may be from the way I was raised it seemed like no matter what I did it wasn't good enough so I have come to believe it...
(((( Hugs ))))
If venting on this would help my e-mail box is always open to you. I may not be here everyday but I get here often enough.
This was a very profound addition to what I was trying to state, thank you for taking the time to add your views and broaden the message of this article.
Sometimes none of these work, when that is the case then it is my hope that the woman has enough self confidence to not require validation of who she is and is not.
I still have to maintain though that a woman who's self worth is not dependent upon the views and opinions of others has nothing to fear. The accusations of a person are nothing but words, eventually the actions of the woman is what determines who and what she is.
Words indeed hold much weight, but they are only as powerful as we allow them to be. If one feels compelled to defend a statement made against them it is often due to a lack of the security to know that comment to be untrue. When you know who you are, what you are, no amount of words can chisel away your self esteem.
It is indeed comforting to see a man so concerned about the reputation of women. Bravo to you Keith.
Thanks for taking a look in my little corner of reality. I don't get the chance to write often but I do try to make it count when I do.
I am extremely opinionated and it gets me plenty of controversies in life.
I think due to that -fault?- that I have learned much more than if I just kept quiet as expected.
I will always have an opinion, and it is mostly based on logic more than anything else. My opinion on sports, for example, is that too much is emphasized on the money, gambling, and what player makes the big bucks rather on the fact that sports are supposed to be a life lesson on teamwork to 'get the job done'. Hence my article on politics for 2006 and the future.
I am harsh sometimes on the people of our country, simply because I expect them not to quiver in fear, but rise to the occasion like the founders did in the American Revolution.
I saw a TV show called "Shark", starring James Woods, the other night. The case was about people who died in a sweatshop. A good show to pique the mind regarding this country's approach to us as a 'workforce'.
The other excellent MOVIE I always like to present to people is, "Wag The Dog", starring Robert DiNiro and Dustin Hoffman. This movie presents what really is happening in our country today...it appears to be run by 'spin-doctors'.
Last of all, The books, "1984" and "Animal Farm", by George Orwell, show a very stunning view of how society responds to the media.
"All animals are created equal, but some animals are more equal than others" always comes to mind when I think of how our government views us as constituents.
Alas, my mind keeps running on.........
Many opinions people make are adopted ones and they have no idea that this is the case until they soul search to find out.
Love your articles and passion
It looks like some comments were removed which makes it hard to follow the flow of the conversation. I wonder why?
idea or outlook.
Hi Moggy thanks for dropping by. I always enjoy reading your comments on other work so I'm glad you felt this a good read. It is confusing to me too why people remove comments they have made, perhaps it relates to bongo's theory of some not being committed to what they say. ??
