It brings me so much joy to be able to squash regurgitated rumors and set the record straight for so many people who are misguided when it comes to current immigration issues.
Just the other day, some kind Gatherite informed the masses, via one of my articles, that the US was in great danger because of TB brought in by illegal immigrants. He went as far as to tell us that the disease would be wiped out totally had it not been for the illegal immigrants bringing it back to the US again and again.
Gentle readers, that myth has, quickly and effectively, just been laid to rest.

SAN FRANCISCO - The worst forms of the killer tuberculosis bug have been gaining ground in the United States, alarming public health officials over imported drug-resistant strains of a disease that is mostly under control in this country.
The majority of drug-resistant infections in the U.S. are brought in by legal visitors, and health officials argue that simply tightening immigration controls won't solve the problem.
The only visitors to the U.S. who are screened for tuberculosis and other medical conditions are immigrant and refugee visa applicants, and TB experts say there is no easy way to screen the millions of tourists, workers and others who aren't currently evaluated.

While the overall rate of new TB cases continues to decline in the United States since national reporting began in 1953, the annual decrease in TB cases has slowed from an average of 7.1 percent (1993 to 2000) to the current average of 3.8 percent (2001-2005), according to CDC. In addition to those with active TB, an estimated 10 to 15 million people in the United States have latent TB.
Minorities are affected disproportionately by TB, which occurs among foreign-born individuals nearly nine times as frequently as among people born in the United States. This is partially because they were often exposed to M. tuberculosis in their country of origin before moving to the United States. In 2004, a very high percentage of Asians (95 percent) and Hispanics (75 percent) who were born outside the United States were reported to have TB.
People from many nationalities live in the United States- Increased numbers of foreign-born nationals come from places where many cases of TB occur, such as Africa, Asia, and Latin America. TB cases among foreign-born nationals now living in the United States account for more than half of the U.S. total.

TB is brought into the United States from Mexico and Central America in three ways: a) persons with active TB disease move northward across the border; b) persons with latent TB infection experience active disease after arrival in the United States; or c) U.S. residents touring Mexico, including immigrants, acquire TB disease after returning to the United States (4--7).
