Put yourself in their shoes.
We've heard that said many times over the course of our lives, but how many times have we ever stopped to actually trade shoes? Probably never. Too many times we critique from the outside looking in without ever looking for the doorway to experience a situation firsthand.
So that's what this article is about - wearing someone else's shoes to get a better feel of how they live, their life, and the obstacles they face.
Here are your shoes.
The year is 2006. You live in a cinderblock house. You still cook over an open flame outdoors. You don't have a car, but you don't need one because there's no place to go in your "rancho" that would warrant one. There is no commerce. The nearest city is 100 miles and a three hour bus ride over mountainous terrain.
You're strong. You're able bodied. You have much potential, but no place to cultivate it. You work the fields that your family has worked for generations, still using the requisite mule and plow - no machinery. You grow most of what you eat and meat is a luxury that you cannot afford because there is no income to speak of. No commerce means no jobs.
Your remote location means that utilities are scarce or don't exist. You have electricity a couple of hours a day and water if you irrigate it from the creek 5 miles below the field. There is a school, but it only goes to the fifth grade. If you want to go to school beyond that, your parents must bus you into the city and pay your tuition. If you get sick, you visit curanderas (medicine women) because clinics and hospitals are not heard of in your part of the world.
There's nothing to look forward to except more of the same. You know your children will never get out of the rancho because there are no opportunities. Even if they were able to land an unschooled or unskilled job, they would make $50 a week, including endless overtime. You come to accept this way of life because it's all you've ever known.
Enter: Someone whose been to "El Norte"
It could be a cousin, a family friend, a neighbor - someone that you know makes it back from the other side and tells you of all the things in El Norte. They speak of it with a starry look in their eyes and you're seeing streets paved in gold. Freedom. Opportunity. They tell you the paltry $50 to be made in Mexican cities for an endless week could be made in less than a day in El Norte.
Your thoughts turn to your future. Your dream is not to succeed or become anything famous. You'd be content with just being able to educate your kids - feed them and clothe them and actually providing a home for them whose cracks were not sealed with dried mud. In your mind you see two things:
The Garden of Eden and The Depths of Hell
You also see your children standing in the middle of the two with pitiful looks on their faces, depending on you to get them across. The someone who has been to El Norte tells you that he's going back and how he plans to do it. He tells you he can't bear the thought of his children or his parents living the rest of their lives in squalor and existing on a diet of corn tortillas and beans.
He warns you it is a perilous journey with no guarantees and tells you of how many thousands that have lost their lives trying to get to El Norte. He tells you it's going to take days and weeks - maybe even months to trek from your remote hell to the frontera. These things weigh heavily on your mind and leave you pondering for a while.
Either way, death is certain for you. Either you stay where you are and die slowly - watching everybody that you love do the same, knowing that there is no light at the end of the tunnel. Or do you risk the only thing you have to call your own - your life - and tread toward that light at the end of the tunnel before it goes out....in order to have the one chance to change the generations of sorrow and poverty that you and yours have endured in your rancho.
Here are your shoes. Which direction would you walk after you put them on?

Beautiful and thought provoking. I wish our leaders spent more times in an alternate pair of shoes.
There is the political element that uses immigration as an arena for election - and a percentage of those who don't yet understand that they are being duped into false promises.
You did a GREAT JOB with that article. Thanks for posting it....
I see immigration from a white female's perspective - and from one who has never been to Mexico.
I still relate because Appalachian culture is in some ways, very similar - including our 'Granny Witches.'
Anyway - please write more!

I say we take Tancredo of Colorado, put him in a ranch in Michoacan or somewhere isolated (Chiapas, Oaxaca) and let him try to find his way back.
What a disaster it is when we persecute the powerless. Have we always done this? Is this the mentality of our nation and are actually more xenophobic than before slavery was abolished?

There are criminals that are in the USA. Born here. My husband's Mom's family fled Russia many, many years ago. The borders were closed to the United States so they had to settle in Mexico. They are Mexican Jews. They own more land in the USA than most people. They give to the poor. And in Mexico they have to watch out not to get kidnapped. They gave us so much money for our wedding and a key to a place they owned in Vail, Co. They had the opportunity from being poor to being very rich by crossing the border years later. My husband has green eyes and doesn't look Mexican. I hear people knocking Mexicans and Jews and I want to scream at the people. My husband just keeps his mouth closed. He isn't ignorant. So remember, criminals come in all colors and sizes and countries. Yes, right here in the USA and they are legal. Please think what you write before you do. Find out the truth, facts about what you are writing about. You could be stuck sticking your foot in your mouth.
There is always someone in the world worse off than yourself. What would be the reaction of these illegal aliens if the shoe were on the other foot? What if the little they had was being threatened because 12 million illegal aliens from some other country were flooding into Mexico to escape their own poverty?
I ask this, because Mexico has some of the most racist, restrictionist immigration policies in the world, are not generous in the least when it comes to opening up their own lands to the people of the world. How can you demand compassion when you refuse to give it?
Furthermore, who in their right mind would go to Mexico to escape anything, but US officials?
You ask us to put ourselves in the other's shoes. Why is it then wrong for us to ask the same?
Oh, some of them had a work ethic closer to the native born Americans they worked with. Those were the lazy ones.

You're *still* whining because I called you on your dependancy on mood altering drugs? Good gawd, amighty.
I'm sick of people coming back with the same tired argument of "But what about the jobs the Americans are losing out on?"
WTF about them? Losing out on is a far cry from refusing to get off your ass and do SOMETHING because public assistance is easier.
How many of these "American citizens" do YOU know that bust their ass from daylight til dark stooped over in the fields? How many of these "American citizens" WANT to trade places and jobs with the illegal immigrants? How many illegal immigrants do YOU know that has turned his nose up a job because it "didn't pay enough and wasn't worth it"? How many of these "American citizens" do YOU know that have done that?
This BS argument of jobs, jobs, jobs is ineffective and tired. When you show me that these "American citizens" are coming off of SSI for a "disability" that doesn't keep them from doing anything, except working...when you show me that these "American citizens" are coming off of unemployment benefits that have been extended to death...when you show me that these "American citizens" are stooped over in the fields, the orchards, the vinyards, and the forrest along side their illegal counterparts - then..and only THEN will I entertain your drivel about the "American citizens" losing out on precious jobs.

I don't mean a TRULY, medically disabled person. I mean a person who is "disabled" due to a mood issue..an anger issue...something that only hinders him working because he as "proof", but not a damned thing else. Someone who drives, lives, is very independant, and unlimited when it comes to anything at all - except working.

But since you took it personally, one can only assume you felt the need to defend yourself against the charges I made. Hmmm.

The gap between the haves and the have-nots is unbridgeable even in imagination. On a planet, that is utterly insignificant on a cosmic scale, there are places of lavish luxury as well as there are places of utmost penury and hardship; there are ultra-modern cities of a first-world country and there are remote villages of a third-world country.
I can somewhat relate to this story. I grew up in an environment without electricity, depending on firewood and kerosene lamps; walking barefoot three miles to the school; never visiting the only licensed but semi-qualified medical practitioner at the town because my grandma was a medicine woman; and amidst barely clad country folk whose commerce thrived less on scarce money circulation but mostly on barter economy.
Jackie, you own what?
JJ, sadly, no. I am not misguided. If I were, I wouldn't have been able to give you such a glimpse of the other side. I'm not saying anything...a n y t h i n g about being eligible for any kind of benefit. You can hardly call wanting the chance to work and provide for your family a benefit. Food, clothing, shelter - basic necessities. That's what they dream of - and educating their children and building a home. Not the day they can come to the US and get food stamps.
Rob - It's unfortunate that you weren't born Mexican instead of American. That way, being the patriot you are, you might have overthrown the corruption by now and made it a better place for all. *yawn*
THAT ONE...LOL...SEE ABOVE!
And that is precisely what is happening! In my state we have an estimated 450,000 illegal immigrants! When they get jobs to feed their families, whose families do you think lose theirs? Mine is one of them! So who is the victim now?
Plain and simple, illegal aliens are crimnals! Get it through your head! Why is that so hard for the liberal's to grasp? The same people that are crying about not letting the president get away with "breaking the law" are the ones who are condoning the illegals breaking the law.
Its funny how liberals pick and choose which laws are important and should be enforced and which shouldn't! What a friggin joke!
1. I will never, ever - do you hear me - n e v e r agree with you on the legality of the issue should take a precedent over a family starving to death and living in squalor. I will never, ever see the criminal side of wanting to come here to work and survive. You are wasting keystrokes.
2. I will never, ever believe the "stealing jobs" tirade unless and until I see American people clamoring to do the same jobs for the same pay that the Mexicans are doing. When you show me your American brothers stooped over in a field for 14 hours 7 days a week, then and only then will I entertain that argument.
The illegals are taking more than the field jobs in my area. We don't have enough crop picking jobs for 450,000 + illegals! And who the hell do you think was picking those crops before the illegals invaded? Do you think they magically picked themselves?
You really need to open your eyes. But then again, you'll never have to worry about starving; your illegal husband will always be able to find work!
Or, maybe you plan to sneak into some other country illegally after this country has been sucked dry and turned into the same kind of cesspool that Mexico has become?
The Americans were doing those jobs before the Mexican's ever came to this country. Now they don't have the option. And if you feel so sorry for the poor little illegals working for peanuts, why are you so insistent that it's such a wonderful opportunity for them? You can't have it both ways. They could be working on a chain gang (and should be) for no pay at all!
Debra, we do need to find a way to control without denying people the opportunity to live here -- but what Senobia is talking about is tolerance for illegal activity because we should feel bad for them and allow them to come here and leach off of the hard work of other people. Yes, illegals do work hard and are a vital part to the American machine, but that doesn't give them a free pass to careless behavior and disrespect for those already here.
Sadly, no. This nation was built on immigrant..and slave labor. The more things change the more they stay the same, huh?
I have never owned a slave, nor hired an immigrant for cheap labor. But I do go to work every day and pay in to this system ... and I don't deserve to have my money taken. You perpetuate the problem with your lack of ability to see what this can do to the future of America.
Don't blame them for your money being taken. If you work, your money is going to be taken for BS anyway. Bombs, planes, raises for congress, housing criminals in the prision system, taking care of the kids whose fathers won't pay support - whatever. Your money is going any way you look at it. The question is where to.
If criminality is the future of America, then we are in a sad state, indeed.
Speaking of handing over money, my comments are getting your points up so that you can probably buy more propaganda. Is that why you do this? Because I can't honestly believe you really think people shouldn't be accountable for stealing from other people ....
I find it laughable that the decendants of European land thieves would cry foul when someone else wants to move in on the land that they stole. It's damned fortunate that some immigrant along the way instilled the "work for it, don't just steal it" value into the forefathers' teachings. Otherwise, where would we be?
2. My taxes pay to house drug dealers when I don't use drugs.
3. My taxes pay to house other criminals when I don't have a criminal record.
4. My taxes go to fund a bullshit war that I am against.
5. My husband's taxes are going in the SS system that people are trying to demand that he not be a part of as a legal permanent resident instead of a citizen.
6. My husband's taxes are going to pay the salaries of the powers that be while he's not able to vote against them yet.
I mean I could go on, but I'm sure you get the picture.....
If MY ancestors had had better immigration laws, most of you wouldn't be here right now. Further, your ancestors returned the hospitality of MY ancestors with guns, cholera-infected blankets, and reservations where nothing can grow.
What, are you afraid the people coming here today will act just like your ancestors did?
link.
Pay atention now. You cannot penetrate Senobia's invincible sense of entitlement. Let it go and don't reward it. This ends the lesson.
Case in point.
If you had more law abiding employers, you would have more law abiding employees.
Stay in Mexico and FIX your own country, stop crying about how difficult it is here for the "poor" illegal.
We have enough problems of our own that have not been fixed yet, and many of our own poor that live just as bad as your portrayed here. You don't see them running over the border into Canada demanding that they take care of them.
Sorry sweetheart, there is no money left for you to collect back benefits - it was all used up by the illegals that came before your people. Gues they just didn't care about you either.
"Senobia,
There you go again; spewing garbage when you don't know what you are talking about. I know exactly how the process works. The interview for the petition is conducted before adjudication is complete and a decision is made. And those interviews are conducted in our office every week. I have personally been present in those interviews and over the years I have also arrested at least 25 illegal aliens that came to those interviews.
You also lied about not knowing the reason for the denial. You know exactly why your petition was denied. Post the "A" number or your receipt number and I will tell everyone exactly why your petition was denied. Oh yeah, the current fee for the form you file to immigrate an alien relative is $190. The bottom line is that your entire story is a complete lie and now you've been busted.
I am a Deportation Officer for the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. I know immigration law and how the immigration system works. And I absolutely despise people like you who deliberately spread disinformation to the unknowing.
I suggest that you all go to this website: WWW.USCIS.GOV. You can get the real information for yourselves and then judge who is telling the truth. Senobia is deliberately lying to you and trying to mislead you about the US immigration system. "
This is not the first person to prove her a liar and decietful woman
You said this country was built on the backs of immigrants and slave labor, both of which are true. However you choose to ignore some important details. While morally irrehensible, slave labor was the only cost effective way for the South to keep up its agricultural economy competetinve at the time. That was 200 years ago so learn to let go and you will get through life a little less bitter and stupid. Putting things behind you allows you to experience and learn new things. Try it sometime. The slave labor relates to now because while it is illegal and immoral for employers to hire illegals, it is necessary so they won't get pushed out of their market by the a**whole who doesn't care about hiring illegals. Also, the key word you forgot to mention was that those immigrants that built this country were LEGAL. My great great grandfather came here legally from Ireland and found work, fighting in WWI. My great grandfather fought in WWII and my grandfather fought in Korea. Each of them worked hard and made a better life for themselves and their family. I only wish your family had done the same so you wouldn't be such an entitled bitch and you would actually know the value of a dollar and more importantly what it takes to earn one!
