Cooking at home invariably involves some amount of dishwashing. Do you wash dishes by hand or in a dishwasher (or does someone else wash them). If you use a dishwasher, do you pre-rinse. Do you think that using a dishwasher is more or less expensive than washing by hand. Do you have anything else that you do to save money or time

I use a dishwasher for most things, unless I use them every day (like my favorite spatula) or unless they will be ruined (wood spoons, some pots or pans, sharp knives.) I assume that, if I pre-rinse (which I do, even though I'm not supposed to have to), the dishes will be cleaner when washed in the dishwasher.
I wash the pots and pans by hand.
I'm sure that it probably costs more to use the dish washer, but it's an expense I'm willing to pay.
I also wash my pots and pans by hand. I used to run my dishwasher every day but lately I've been trying to do so only every other day or every third day if I can help it. With it being just my husband and myself, it's easier to do that.
When I am at my parents house however, I do not rinse the dishes before putting them into the dishwasher. They have always come out clean. . .
He tries to keep up with the dishes, not an easy job.
Our dishwasher is one of those ones on wheels, you have to wheel it over and plug it in and hook it up to the faucet on the sink! LOL, when we got it, I didn't even know they still made that style!
I usually wash cups and lightly soiled plates by hand. It only takes a moment. I tend to use the dishwasher when the dishes are greasy because they take so much soap, hot water and time to wash in the sink.
I have a dishwasher in my house, but I hand wash certain items, such as pots, pans, and some other things (can't think of the list at the moment). I do pre-rinse, but I was hoping if someone can tell me any of the dishwasher detergent that claims they can skip the pre-rinse phase will really do what it promises. I don't know which way is more expensive. I don't know how to calculate the electric usage, the water usage, the detergent prices, etc. But I do know one thing - the dishwasher saves me *time* and *trouble* from having to hand wash the dishwashable items. And that is worthwhile for me.
There is no dishwasher where my husband lives. So we had to wash everything by hand. Well, not "we", it is "I" that washes pretty much everything. It got me pretty fired up a few times. My husband just piles them up in the sink, so every weekend when I go visit him, I have to do his laundry, do his dishes, clean his place.... It's really not what I want to spend time on. But the kitchen is sooooooo small, and there is no where to install a dishwasher even if we wanted to.
During the day, we leave things in a rubber tub in the sink. Then wash them when the tub is filled which is usually by time we start dinner.
They said that you waste too much money/water pre rinsing.
The recommended dishwasher detergent at that time was a cheapy Walmart branded, the next best but more expensive was Electrosol.
We moved in June, leaving behind a huge apartment complete with dishwasher, disposer, balcony, pool access, two bathrooms and a set of wonderfully enormous closets in my very large bedroom.
We now have a tiny apartment (about 500 ft less). No dishwasher, no disposer, no balcony and everything must be kept organized or it's a mess.
Incentive to buy a house = VERY HIGH
LOL
We had a dishwasher. Then we moved to a 700 square foot house with no closets and it became much needed storage (we kept linens in it). We eventually replaced it with a cabinet.
