Heart-breaking News

My coworker told me this today in the hall way so I don't have the exact details, but it was so heart-breaking. She said a woman in England just had a new born baby, and she had a cold sore of some sort on the corner of her mouth. She kissed her baby, but because the new born didn't have the immunity to the germs from the cold sore, the baby died the next day. Supposedly the doctor said if the mother had had the break-out during her pregnancy, the baby would have had the immunity through the mother's blood stream. But since the break-out happened after the baby was born, the baby didn't get any immunity.

I felt so horrible after I heard the story. After I had Kyleigh, this kind of tragic baby news always gets me really hard. I am not literally frightened, but I am always a little "scared" like "what if this had happened to Kyleigh" type of feeling. I feel really sorry for her, losing a precious baby like that.

Oh my! that's awful. I can't help but wonder if there wasn't something else wrong with the baby though. That doesn't seem like it would cause death that quickly??? But, I'm no doctor.

My God, how sad. I cannot imagine it. Like you, that is one of my biggest fears.

How horrible. :( Herpes simplex type I, which causes cold sores, can make you VERY sick the first time you get it. My daughter was in bad shape for a bit and she was ... five I think? about then. It's tough because, if you get cold sores now and then you probably have it, you can be contagious even when you aren't having visible sores, and can easily pass it to your children - even if you're aware of all this and trying to be careful. That poor family. :(

I know how you feel, after I had my kids, I can't watch or read anything that has to do with sickness or abuse to children. I just avoid it when I can.

So sad. I understand what you are saying about your daughter. I have a 17 month old and whenever I hear something awful I give him am extra littl hug or kiss and thank god that he has given me such a wonderful happy healthy litle guy.

That is so sad. I was freaked out, too, hearing stories like this, when I had little kids. I remember writing about my fears in a poem, when I was pregnant with my first.

Thats awful! I do agree with what Renetia said as well.. thats starnge a cold sore could act that quickly to cause death.. But ya never know..

so sad, i nearly killed my daughter with a touch or thats how i perceived it when her lungs collapsed at my touch....i can't imagine this woman's pain

Holy cow that is so sad. I don't have kids & I'm freaking out. I agree w/ all of you maybe it was something else that caused her death???? Or maybe Karen H is right, God needed the fresh rose for His garden. Very sad for the family. God bless.

That's really sad.I recently just had a friend lose her son.They needed to take him off life support.She went into labor and didn't realize it at first or make it to the hospital in time before the ambilicol cord starting choking him.It's really hard for me as well.Especially after having 2 miscarriages.I can't imagine losing a child like that.Going through a miscarriage is bad enough but that...I don't know how I could handle it.
