Today (Sunday 2/3/08) we took Kyleigh to Toys R Us. I have previously mentioned that we discovered her interest in the Dora dolls. So it was my mom's intention to buy her more of those.
We put Kyleigh in the shopping cart and started from the first aisle in the store. This was not her first trip to Toys R Us, but she wasn't too interested before, maybe because she was too little to understand. Today, she appeared very excited, and she was pointing at everything.
My mom picked up a few boxes of dolls along the way, and we could tell that Kyleigh was showing her preference. For dolls she didn't care for, she pushed them away. She liked a green fairy-looking doll with lit-up wings in particular. We put it right next to her and she was playing with it during the whole trip. So I knew that was definitely a keeper.
When we arrived at the Dora section, she was almost ecstatic. (See, I still don't understand what's so attractive about this Dora character.) We showed her two doll boxes at a time, and asked her which one she preferred. She would look at them for a while, and point her finger at one of the two. We repeated this process and finally got down to two boxes that were her favorites.
So we left the store with three new dolls, the two Dora dolls and the green fairy doll. She couldn't wait and played with the green fairy doll in the car on the way home.
What I think that was really amazing is that she was actually making choices. She didn't just want every single doll in the store. She compared the two boxes we showed her and picked the one she preferred.
One thing that was a bummer was that the 4-feet tall Dora doll was no longer available. My husband and I saw it when we took Kyleigh to Toys R Us during the Black Friday Sale last year. Of course, we didn't care for it at that time because we were still under the no-doll policy, and Kyleigh did not seem interested in it at all. If we were to see it today, we would most likely buy it. My mom has been trying to find a large size doll for Kyleigh. She said she bought me a large doll when I was a baby, and I was really having fun playing with the doll that was taller than me, until one day I became too tall (and of course the doll never grew up). I don't remember anything about it, but it was a fond memory for my mom, and she wanted to do the same for Kyleigh.
Overall, I think Kyleigh had a lot of fun today.
