When my kids were growing up, my husband always "led" the dinner conversation and did most of the talking. He frequently told stories about people in his office and often complained about the president and other people in the news. Richard Nixon was president during a number of those years and my husband always had a lot to say about him. Years later my daughter told us that she thought that Mr. Nixon worked in her dad's office before he became president.

My dad was a civil engineer before he retired. Not until I went off to college did I realize that most people don't discuss the operations of sewer plants while at the dinner table.
We always had family dinners when the kids lived at home Selene. And now we look forward to our traditional Sunday
dinners with the kids and grandkids. Too bad you don't live a little closer. You could share with us.
I wish my family had had a nice catch up time at the family table. To this day, I am uncomfortable sitting around the dinner table.
Your story is hilarious and I bet you have lots of good memories of these times. This is a good memory.
Thanks.
What kind of questions do you ask that elicit the one word answers? My kids always resented when my husband asked "how's school?" But they were happy to expound on movies, tv programs and other topics within their area of interest.
also.. i learned somewhere along the way that you dont ask HOWS SCHOOL.. nah.. not a good question... the answer is always.. its ok.
but if you direct it in a different manner like...
HOw did you feel when you took your test today? or Anyone else at school with a cold.. does your teacher enjoy you all telling stories... or.. I just love the way Mrs Teacher told me that she liked your writing... or art work or what ever... and have you gotten to write anymore.
how about... Gosh I remember skinning my knee up at recess and my ________ friend would do.... anyone you really enjoy playing with and what sorta games do you enjoy .. we played hopscotch and I loved to join in kick ball..
steer away from direct questions that a YES or NO comment can be made.. I tell you what... our boys talked up a storm all the time after I learned a better approach.. and i can't remember where I learned it from... honestly.. it might have been from Oprah years ago. I really didnt watch to many other shows.. but I remember it was from a tv talk show and omg.. it worked!!!!
