The first book I ever read on my own...The Pokey Little Puppy. I was only three and it was so much fun. I loved that book so much I wore the cardboard cover into nothing.

Vivian, that was The Little Engine That Could. It had a red train engine with blue wheels and yellow smokestack on the cover. I had that one, too!

Beauty and the Beast - because it showed that looks didn't matter as much as the goodness inside ones heart.

Ohh yeah...Where the Wild Things Are is another good one.

I don't remember Tootle...I do remember the Golden Books though. I think I still have them somewhere along with many other childhood books.

I think those Golden Books used to come in a pack of four. One of other ones I had was The Three Little Kittens (as in lost their mittens). I can't remember the fourth one...anybody remember?

Hmmm...I think you're doing good to remember those, De. I just remember Golden Books..heh I can't wait to find my books again. It'll bring back so many memories.

_Myths and Legends of the Ages_, by M. French, a compilation of world tales written in language easy enough for a chld to read independently. I read it over and over and over again.

Dorine, excellent...I'm actually not familiar with that one. I'm going to have to check that one out.

I also like Aesop's Fables. I remember reading it over and over again.

When it comes to children's books, I have so many favorites! I read all the time when I was growing up, then I read as an adult so I have read a lot. Children's books have always been a favorite of mine and I collect them as well. I always loved horses so the horse books were my first favorites. One of my first total horse book favorites is The Grand Rogue by Frances Priddy. And I loved all those Marguerite Henry horse books - Misty of Chincoteague, King of the Wind, Mustang Wild Spirit of the West, Justin Morgan, Born to Trot. I also loved the books that were written by C. W. Anderson. He was an illustrator too and his horse illustrations were always some of my favorites. He wrote Afraid to Ride, Outlaw, Blind Connemara, and several non-fiction collections of short stories about thoroughbreds. There's a couple of horse stories by Shirley Rousseau Murphy that I adore - Sand Ponies and White Ghost Summer. There's the Gypsy trilogy by Sharon Wagner. There one horse book called Shannon by Barbara Berry that I liked so well that I named my daughter after the horse in the book. Most of the horse books that I just listed were such favorites that I collected copies as an adult and still have them and re-read them ocassionally even now. Some NON-horse books that I liked were the mystery series books like Trixie Belden, Nancy Drew, Hardy Boys, Three Investigators. I liked Trolley Car Family by Eleanor Clymer. There were the Henry Reed books by Keith Robertson, those were certainly funny. These are just a few of the children's books that I liked and still like really. After this, I think I may have to do an article about my favorite children's books.

Little Men and Little Women, by Louisa May Alcott, because they were the first books that really drew me in. I had never really gotten as invovled in the other books I read as I did with these two.

Ohh yes, and Nancy Drew...I loved to read Nancy. I want to see the movie.

I loved a book called Julius. I can't remember who wrote it but I still have it!

The Boxcar Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner

I agree, Shel Silverstein is awesome. We used to read him all the time in jr. high, and he was one of the main authors used in our "poetry contests", where we would recite poetry and short stories, or excerpts from books. So much fun!! Besides that, my fav book from early childhood was the Hungry Hungry Caterpillar (I think that's what it was called)......the book I had had a fuzzy circle in the middle that you could see throughout the whole book (cut out circles.....don't know if you guys know what I'm talking about, it's too early my mind isn't working right, can't explain very well lol). I wore that book out!! Then in the pre-teen years it was Bridge to Terabithia and The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe. My campground used to have a clearing out in the forest that was my "Bridge" spot.....I had a great imagination, only child lol.

I absolutley love Shel Silverstein. One of my favorite poems if his is "Sarah Cynthia Silvia Stout, Would Not Take the Garbage Out" I have too many favorites to name. But the one book that I always by for my friends kids is "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" by Judi Barrett
