When we moved in, you couldn’t even see the fence because it was covered by overgrown rosemary and lavender. I wish that I had pictures, but that was pre-Gather days and I didn’t know better. Well, I was excited about moving and set about like gangbusters ripping all of the overgrown plants out. I bought the half barrels, planted seeds and all was growing great. That is until I fell into the funk of depression and let it all go wild or die.
Enter some new happy pills and the great weather we have had in the last month ……Throw in some free closet door shutters that I picked up thanks to Craig’s List, some paint and a few dollars in plants and viola! (I hope that the people don't mind that I painted their closet doors!) And that isn't just plain dirt, I planted two flats of wholly thyme and hope that it will fill the space soon. When you walk on it, the smell of thyme permeates the air.
The diamond shape square in the middle is an old card table frame that I picked up a long time ago leaning against the dumpster. I just painted with a dry brush.

I think that the biggest trick for being Green and recycling for me is seeing objects in a new way. Truly, another person’s trash can be a treasure for me. I just turn things this way and that, looking for new shapes and uses. You might see that outdated piece of furniture lying by the side of the road with a free sign and say, “Yuck, who would want that!” I look at it and think, “That would make a really cool birdbath with storage for my garden tools.”
You may be thinking that if my garden has all of these crazy bright colors that my house is a nightmare, it isn’t. I am really traditional inside, but the yard is my place to experiment and explore. I call it “Understated Funky”.

At this pace, you'll have your whole house remodeled for, what, $27?
Thanks you all.
Amanda......I don't think that I will even reach $27 for the yard and garden except for maybe the plants. Still, I am going cheap on those as well and trying to start with small ones or propagating things from other areas. (Like the Bougainvillea, I started from a cutting stolen from his daughter's house)
Thanks for all of your comments. I am having so much fun doing this and don't have many to share my ideas with in my non-cyber life. Your comments brighten my day and make me want to run out and do more!
Congratulations on winning the prize package for the "Water for Elephants" book discussion group!
