Transforming Old Winter Garments into Cuddly Creatures. Win a Copy of "Make It!"

What You’ll Need: old glove, needle and thread, buttons, cotton balls.

1. Turn an old glove inside out.

2. Sew up the middle two fingers and the thumb using a simple back stitch.

3. Turn the glove right side out again. Push out the fingers that haven’t been sewn up

4. Stuff the glove with cotton balls and sew up the bottom.

5. Make a face using stitches, fabric scraps, or buttons.

Sounds interesting. Not too much winter wear in our area! We get chilly winters but no snowy weather.

Adorable! I was just looking at some old gloves of Gideon's wondering what we might make with them. I think when this arrives we will get to work on these fellas!

Very cute critter. I'd put more face on it. We've made skirts and throw pillows using XXL college logo T-shirts. I think a puffy snowsuit would make awesome pillows or cuddly critters. If you have no outgrown snowsuits or jackets, think resale shop!

Another cute project is cutting up toeless socks to make sweater vests for small bears. Argyles are especially sporty for the collegiate bear! We used to make sock puppets, too, and put on shows.

My kids would love to make one of these -- I think we'll try it out this weekend since I know we have some old winter stuff that is too worn to pass on but would make decent critters :-) I love to take those heavy winter socks that always end up without a partner and let the kids make puppets out of them -- we add yarn for hair, googly eyes, and all sorts of decorations. It gets pretty wild! They make them as people or animals or monsters -- whatever they want and then they put on shows for the family. It keeps them busy for hours :-)

I've never attempting sewing. We use old winter clothes for our snowmen, though! We've got some of the best dressed snowmen around :) Scarves, hats, gloves/mittens, broken sunglasses, a pipe from my dad, garage sale purses and so many other things end up decorating our snow men and women.

Our old jeans are used to make jean quilts. They are nice and warm for the winter.

My five year old granddaughter would love this. She has a bear that she has had for four years. We are always making things. I had not thought of using her old winter clothes, but you know, the ideas are flowing, and it just might stop the "wailing" when her mom tries to throw away her old favorites she has outgrown. Thanks for the idea, and yes, I would love the book. I really cannot skip with her anymore, :), Grandma is too funny looking now. :) Ellen B

we took a old winter scarf and made a slithery snake with it by sewing on eyes and a tongue.

We have also made cat toys out of old thermal socks the cats love them filled with soft fabric, they will fight with them.

We have always used old clothes for other items around our home.

W've often turned old clothes into purses. The shape and material of the garmet determined the finished product. Each one was a one of a kind. It's fun to save the fancy buttons etc. to add to the purses. Each one is unique. I even had my daughter's friends request one of my purses for a birthday gift!

that is too cute. we'll have to try it! we've been makign sea monkeys out of blue striped socks. and, we take old fleece pullovers, cut off the arms, sew them up and also the bottom and add straps, and you've got a fun sort of backpack. it looks much cuter than it sounds!

Rice Bag Warmer. Cut off the sleeve of an old flannel shirt, fill with long grain white rice and sew up the ends. This will make a nice rice warmer for your back after a hard day's work, or your feet on a cold winter night. Just heat in the microwave for a few minutes

When my boys were very young, we rarely got to spend christmas together because I worked in bakeries...so....we used to put the tree up early and make and hang an ornament everyday till christmas....
You can cut stocking, mitten, stars and hearts, bellsout, add bits of ribbon and buttons and such with glue to make ornaments.

Another great use for flannels, denim and such is to cut them into large squares, purchase heat proof insulating fabric, sew it to one square's back side, then sew that square and another together on three sides(inside out) turn it right side out and sew in the fourth side, press it ...these can be used for hot pads....smaller ones for coasters, and larger ones for place mats

And lastly(I promise) is to make Santa sacks for wrapping christmas presents or gifts in general with...out of pant legs, shirt arms, and bottom of tee shirts..depending on the size needed..this is a great use for old table cloths too....

you can make purses, scarves and gloves from old wool sweaters. you just have to felt the material, cut out a pattern and put it together. it's fun and pretty easy for everyone to do.

It was not crafty but I once created doll clothing from regular clothing because I dried some wool sweaters and they shrank to the size of some of my larger dolls - needless to say, my mother was not pleased...

who hasn't made a sock puppet for their kids! I have always found the simplier the gift, a gift made from the heart, becomes their favorite! I'm looking forward to grandchildren someday to share my creative talents with!

We've made draft catchers, sock monkeys, tiny blankets for Barbie dolls, etc. That would be a great book to have.
